?? Boosting Observation Capacity with Innovative, Cost-Effective Technologies ??? Coastal regions around Europe are the setting for a thriving blue economy with increasing demands inspiring growing activities in renewable energy, aquaculture, fisheries, maritime shipping, tourism and more.? To help society better understand the impacts of the blue economy on the land-sea interface areas and to inform policymakers and environmental management initiatives, there must be a boost in data collection, particularly in the scope of in situ observations. ?? LandSeaLot is increasing in situ observations by introducing cost-effective, reliable technologies and engaging citizen science communities. This novel approach empowers citizens with the right tools and training to help scientists and society improve our understanding of the land-sea interface and support sustainable management of coastal resources. ?? The approach will be tested! LandSeaLot will conduct pilots of the cost-effective technologies, including innovative sensors, and the integration of citizen science programmes to ensure success, and its future adoption as a viable solution to increase observation capacity. This will take place in? nine LandSeaLot? Integration Labs located in key strategic areas across the EU. ?? Why is observing the land-sea interface important?? The land-sea interface is the area that links terrestrial and marine landscapes, sustaining a large part of the Europe’s population, along with vital economies and a multitude of activities including: ??? tourism ?? fisheries ?? aquaculture ? energy production ?? trade ??? transport However, this prosperity comes with the challenge of conflicting interests and uses. In the coming years, the resources produced in coastal regions and along the sea shelves are expected to increase as much as six times for food and 40 times for energy. ?? The need to reconcile ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation with the increasing demand for energy, food and bioresources from the sea is more pressing than ever. Land-sea interface area observations play a key role in supporting the generation of science-based knowledge needed to inform policy decisions, enable communities to evaluate trade-offs and take action. LandSeaLot brings together the best existing scientific expertise in various domains to co-design a common observation strategy for the land-sea interface. ????♀? ? How? By engaging with key stakeholder groups at the local and European level to establish better integration and collaboration between land-sea interface communities. ?? And it doesn't end there! ????Shining a spotlight on the North Aegean LandSeaLot Integration Lab! ??LandseaLot partner Hellenic Centre for Marine Research held a successful workshop at the North Aegean LandSeaLot Integration Lab with key local stakeholders. Located in an area under threat from plastic and nutrient pollution due to human activities and inputs from the Dardanelles Straits, this LandSeaLot Integration Lab is tasked with evaluating integrated approaches to trace plastic pathways from rivers to the sea and assess the impact of nutrient inputs on the ecosystem’s trophic status. ??Key takeaway → Collaboration is key for the North Aegean LandSeaLot Integration Lab! There is broad consensus among the participants that success lies in cooperation between the LandSeaLot team and local authorities and communities. ?? By sharing LandSeaLot’s advanced technology and data management skills with the management units of Evros Delta and Dadia National Parks, fishermen, local universities, and regional administration authorities, and in return benefitting from their expertise of local environmental challenges, we can ensure effective field operations and maximise the positive impacts of LandSeaLot’s project objectives. ??
