Just read a post from Kieran Flanagan about how the future of work is companies hiring people to take on more strategic work and figure out how to multiply their own productivity via AI agents. That might be a few years out, but I do think that if you want to work in tech, you're gonna need to get comfortable with AI. There's all sorts of valid concerns around the ethics of training and using AI, the human impact of AI taking some jobs (while creating others, of course), impacts on the environment, etc. But here's the cool opportunity this presents: you're still early. ChatGPT exploded onto the scene less than 2.5 years ago, and we've only been buzzing about AI agents for a year or so. The playing field is rarely as level as it is right now - and that means regardless of your background, you can be an expert on this and stand out. And because this is such a new space, companies aren't going to be able to hire just based on where you've worked or your job title - they'll have to assess your actual skills, and this unlocks opportunity for a much larger group of people. If this is an area you want to grow, here's some steps you can take: 1. Practice building AI agents (I've been using Zapier for this!) 2. Identify use cases in your current work; if your employer doesn't let you use AI, find things at home, on a project where you're volunteering, etc. 3. Play around with AI features on the different tools you use to understand capabilities and limitations, which tools work best for which use cases, etc. 4. Join AI-focused communities or follow AI-focused newsletters to keep up to date since things move quickly. 5. Take courses to help you accelerate your skills. I'll drop some resources below as well!!
