?? Ngombe, Zambia ????: Naomi and Patricia, sisters from Ngombe, faced a long struggle to secure their family land. Though their late parents left them the property, the lack of a title deed left their ownership uncertain. In 2021, they received an offer letter, a key step in land titling. They were informed that obtaining the title deed would cost approximately $105, with an option to pay half upfront to collect it. But financial hardship delayed the process. Naomi, who runs a small salon, earns just $15 per month. Both sisters were unemployed until late 2023, making land payments impossible. “We had to choose between securing our title deed and meeting daily needs,” Naomi shared. With support from a LandBridge International grant, they finally obtained their title deed, ensuring legal ownership. “The title deed gives me claim to the property, and no one can challenge my ownership. It also clearly identifies my boundaries, so I know the extent of my property,” Patricia said. LandBridge International is proud to help women like Naomi and Patricia overcome financial barriers to land ownership and build a more secure future. Meet Maria, a resilient 56-year-old farmer from Mwanza, who recently secured a certificate of title for her maize farm, thanks to LandBridge International and TANZANIA LAND TENURE ASSISTANCE(TLTA) NGO. As a divorced woman, Maria's journey to land ownership has been shaped by her determination to ensure security for her family. "I needed this certificate to make it legal that it is my property," she says. "When someone wants to invade my property, I can just show them the certificate of title, and that will solve any dispute." For years, financial barriers prevented Maria from obtaining the certificate. Now, with her land legally under her name, Maria feels a sense of empowerment and peace of mind. "This will help my children secure the property when I am gone," she shares, emphasizing the long-term impact of her achievement. Maria plans to use the land differently in the future, ensuring its value continues to grow for her family. Her son, Federic, will inherit this legacy, marking a generational shift toward security and opportunity. Lusaka, Zambia ?? Meet Evalina – an inspiring 89-year-old woman who has worked her land since the early 1970s to support her family. Today, she lives with her grandchildren, relying on her daughters’ limited income to get by. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity International, Evalina’s house was rehabilitated but she lacked the financial resources to secure legal documentation for her home. “All her sons have long since passed away. We are all that is left and we are unable to afford to the payment for a land title deed. We live by handouts." - Evalina’s daughter, Veronica. Despite her age and challenges, Evalina dreamt of securing a title deed for her land, bringing peace of mind and stability to her family. At LandBridge International, we are determined to help women like Evalina obtain title deeds that validate and protect their rights. Third Grant Milestone: On July 21st, 2024, LandBridge International issued its third grant to the TANZANIA LAND TENURE ASSISTANCE(TLTA) NGO to provide payments for the Customary Certificates of Right of Occupancy (CCROs) of 250 vulnerable women throughout the villages of Kikombwe, Lyamgungwe, Mfyome, Ng’enza, and Nyabula. In less than 60 days of receiving the grant, TLTA selected beneficiaries in accordance with LandBridge guidelines and distributed the 250 CCROs, marking a major step toward sustainable development and increased financial security for women in rural Tanzania. Many of you have read about the tragic death of Ugandan Olympic runner #RebeccaCheptegei. Cheptegei was the victim of a violent act carried out by her partner in front of her children. What may not be widely known is that her death was linked to a land dispute—a factor that has been connected to many cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Cheptegei had acquired land in Trans Nzoia, Kenya, to be closer to the region's athletic training facilities. According to local reports, a dispute arose between Cheptegei and her partner over the land where her house was located, which escalated into violence. The link between land and GBV is an important, yet often overlooked issue. As emphasized in the articles below, it is crucial to understand the potential GBV implications of land interventions to fully grasp their impact on women’s safety and well-being. We firmly believe that secure land rights for women are more than just a matter of ownership; they are critical to ensuring dignity, safety, and empowerment.
