With fuel combustion to generate electricity and heat accounting for almost half of global carbon emission in 2022 alone, decarbonising the energy sector has become essential if we are to meet global climate goals. Across Asia, countries are addressing this challenge by advancing large-scale renewable energy projects. But who benefits from these projects, and who bears their costs? Our latest Deal Narrative takes a look at the Nabas Wind Farm on Panay Island in the Philippines as a case study to highlight the challenges and trade-offs in fast-tracking renewable energy projects. Independent global land monitoring initiative promoting transparency and accountability in large-scale land acquisitions
关于我们
The Land Matrix is an independent land monitoring initiative that promotes transparency and accountability around large-scale land acquisitions (LSLAs) in low- and middle-income countries across the world. By capturing data on its website, the initiative aims to stimulate debate on the trends and impacts of LSLAs, facilitate wide participation in collecting and sharing data about these deals, and contribute to the growing movement towards open data. In this way, it seeks to support greater public involvement in critical decisions that affect the lives of land-users and strengthen their positions in the processes that govern access to land.

Don't miss today's 3D seminar, moderated by our partner German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), exploring the gap between the promises and realities of global carbon markets, focusing in particular on REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) projects within the voluntary carbon market. While nature-based solutions, particularly conservation projects under REDD+, constitute a significant share of carbon credits, their effectiveness and social impact have been widely debated. The panelists will discuss the difficulties in establishing accurate counterfactuals for REDD+ projects and past errors that have led to a significant overestimation of actual emission avoidance. The seminar will also address the evolving discourse on the integrity crisis of the voluntary carbon markets. Aside from methodological challenges, the panelists will present insights into challenges such as inadequate benefit-sharing mechanisms, lack of community consent, and how these issues continue to persist also in newer projects. The discussion aims to critically assess the climate and socio-economic impacts of the voluntary carbon market and explore necessary reforms to improve its effectiveness and socioeconomic outcomes. Panelists:?Prof Jan B?rner, University of Bonn, and Dr Raymond Achu Samndong, The Tenure Facility Moderator:?Dr Christoph Kubitza, GIGA About the 3D Seminar: The 3D seminar is a 45-minute online forum for policy and research exchange. Two speakers – one researcher and one practitioner – touch upon key topics in development policy with the goal of stimulating a meaningful dialogue across the theory & practice divide. We look forward to engaging with you in a dialogue! JOIN HERE: https://bit.ly/4kkfTyw

???IFAD is urging global leaders at COP16 in Cali, Colombia, to direct greater focus and funding to small-scale farmers. ?? The world faces a dual challenge: feeding a growing population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, while reversing the degradation of the natural environment. ?Addressing this situation requires transforming agri-food systems to become more sustainable and biodiversity-friendly. This transformation includes adopting agroecological practices and promoting agrobiodiversity,? said Oliver Page, Climate Change and Environmental Specialist at IFAD. ?? IFAD is committed to delivering a people-focused approach, balancing nature, livelihoods, and food security. ??Learn more about IFAD at #COP16: https://bit.ly/4eSiBZ1

?? The flip side to expanding soy production and a growing land market in the Argentine Chaco is increasingly limited access to commons to common-pool resources for local communities – but our latest deal narrative demonstrates how a development model that mitigates the negative effects of the expansion of agribusiness in the region is possible… as long as it considers the customary tenure arrangements that regulate access to and control over the land to ensure sustainable and equitable development. ?? Solar panels, wind turbines, electric batteries, and more – efforts to transform the energy sector are multiplying across the globe. The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources holds the promise of a greener, lower-carbon economy. However, this shift relies heavily on mineral resources, which has led to a land grab by the mining industry. #Lithium, #cobalt, #nickel and #copper: The opening of new mines – primarily in countries of the global South – raises significant concerns. In many cases, the lands acquired are already used for activities such as pastoralism, agriculture, gathering or hunting, which are essential to ensure #foodsecurity for local people. Compounding this issue is?the lack of consultation and exclusion of local communities, which result in disputes. The environmental costs are also significant: some mining investments are located in biodiversity-rich areas. Extractive activities often result in pollution of surrounding arable lands. With the full-scale invasion in Ukraine by Russia, in addition to taking a heavy toll on human lives, significant negative impact from the military action on soil health and productivity has been observed, with more than 30% of Ukrainian land now unsuitable for agriculture.?Agricultural exports are widely recognised as an important part of Ukraine’s economic stabilisation, but as pressure builds on available agricultural land, can the country balance environmental protection with economic needs? ?? ?? Just published! Our latest country profile delves into large-scale land acquisitions (LSLAs) in Serbia - a country in which a favourable climate and large cultivated areas create ideal conditions for varied agricultural production, but where complex and tangled land relations, a legacy of its past as a socialist Yugoslav state, exacerbate the issue of land ownership, even after the privatisation process in the 1990s and early 2000s. Adding fuel to the fire, with the price of agricultural land remaining one of the lowest across Europe, unmanageable competition and land inequality between domestic family farms and transnational large-scale investors continues to cause conflict.
