  • This week work started to breathe new life into Morecambe's West End - creating a vibrant, welcoming space for everyone to enjoy. Landscaping, enhancing accessibility, and replacing pathways is taking place to the area outside More Music in Morecambe to make the area on Parliament Street a more inviting space. Work will be ongoing for a few weeks to finish the makeover, which also involves cleaning and revitalising walls and overhauling the railings. Work is also due to start soon on Alexandra Square, which will soon look much brighter with a lovely seaside-themed resin artwork to transform the large concrete circle into a captivating centre piece. It will also feature refurbished benches and railings, and a new nature trail for children to explore. The work is thanks to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, a Government fund which aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK, investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills. #Morecambe #Community #UKSPF

  • Proposals for 49 new affordable homes as part of Lancaster’s Canal Quarter development site have taken a further step forward. We've long held ambitions to develop the Canal Quarter, with a masterplan setting out how to transform the derelict and underused site into a vibrant new neighbourhood. The first site being made available is Nelson Street car park. It will be redeveloped with South Lakes Housing and Tyson Construction. The project has been developed with the support of the Brownfield Land Release Fund (BLRF2) from the One Public Estate programme. It's likely to be at least a year before the car park closes and we're reassuring motorists and businesses that temporary and long-term measures will be in place to make up for any loss of parking spaces. By April 2026, despite losing Nelson Street, it’s planned that the total number of spaces will increase to 1,554, rising to 1,654 with Kingsway. This exceeds the current availability of 1,329. Work is already underway to increase the available spaces on other car parks and the Castle car park is also set to reopen in April 2026, providing a boost to the city’s parking spaces. More extensive parking on Kingsway is also being explored, which would provide overspill capacity and extra spaces for busy times such as when festivals and events are taking place. • Previously unseen sketches and personal items of comedy legend Eric Morecambe have returned to his home district and will go on display in Lancaster City Museums. Born in Morecambe, Eric became one of Britain’s greatest comedians and 40 years after his death a collection of items from his family home was auctioned, offering an intimate look into the public and private life of a man who, alongside his comedy partner Ernie Wise, entertained millions over the years. The council's museum team successfully acquired a selection of Eric’s belongings, including school reports, Eric’s license as a child entertainer, and previously unseen sketches for the Morecambe and Wise Show. The Museums faced stiff competition from high-profile bidders like Robbie Williams, who purchased Eric’s iconic glasses and pipe for £20,000. The collection is thanks to local donations to a fund for acquiring and maintaining items in the collection. Some of the items are now on display at Lancaster Maritime Museum, giving visitors a unique insight into the life of the local hero who entertained millions.
