Last week, William O’Dell had the incredible opportunity to speak with the University of Texas at Arlington ASCE Student Chapter about Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) - a critical yet often overlooked aspect of infrastructure and transportation projects. SUE investigations play a vital role in enhancing safety, reducing project risks, and improving design accuracy by identifying underground utilities before construction begins. William shared insights into real-world challenges, technological advancements, and the essential role of utility coordination in TxDOT projects. The students brought thoughtful questions and fresh perspectives, making it a truly engaging discussion. At this year’s TxDOT Utility Week Conference, "Partners in Coordination," our team at Lamb-Star Engineering contributed to advancing industry standards through insightful presentations and collaboration. Joseph Porter, PMP shared his expertise on the importance of defined QC processes in SUE, UC and Survey, showcasing a project lifecycle with real-world examples to raise the bar for quality deliverables. He joined an esteemed panel with John Jaeger, Luke Cooper, Harshit Shukla, Ph.D., and moderator Peter Borsack. In partnership with the Amarillo District, William O'Dell, PE, ASQ CMQ-OE and Dakota Smith, PE presented utility relocation challenges and solutions on the TxDOT US 87 widening project in Moore/Hartley County. Their session emphasized overcoming ROW issues, unknown utilities, and even coordinating around a helium pipeline owned by the Bureau of Land Management. TxDOT’s conference goal of uniting owners, engineering firms, and utility stakeholders was reflected throughout our work — emphasizing teamwork, problem-solving, and communication to drive seamless project execution. #UtilityWeek #Teamwork #TxDOT #Collaboration #Lamb-Star
