Well Said! The overwhelming response around #Training2025 Keynote Speaker, Sarah Hicks, continues with Tiffany Prince (she/her) offering the perfect pitch (and balance) on the connection between #leadership and the conductor of an orchestra. #LeadershipDevelopment ?? Please take a moment to take in these notes ?? - and (bonus!) they can be used with your team to help make memorable points and strike the right chord. Feel free to connect with Tiffany for more insights, tips, best practices.
Last week, I attended the Training 2025 conference in Orlando, FL. One of the keynote speakers really sparked some insights for me around leadership in a new and different perspective that you may not consider. The keynote was Sarah Hicks, Principal Conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall, Minnesota Orchestra and here are my key takeaways from her message. ???What Business Leaders Can Learn from Orchestra Conductors??? A world-class conductor pulled back the curtain on leadership lessons from the orchestra pit—and the parallels to business were striking. ???Leadership is Influence, Not Control Conductors don’t?command?an orchestra; they create a shared vision, set the tempo, and trust their musicians to execute. The best leaders do the same—empowering teams rather than micromanaging. ???Communication Goes Beyond Words With just a gesture, a conductor can signal energy, tempo, or collaboration. Leaders, take note: body language, tone, and presence matter as much as the words you say. ???Every Role is Essential Second violins may not get the spotlight, but without them, the melody lacks depth. Great organizations recognize that every contribution—big or small—shapes the final performance. ???Adaptability is Key Two conductors can interpret the same Beethoven symphony completely differently. Likewise, business leaders must be able to adjust their style to bring out the best in their teams. ???Trust and Collaboration Win Over Fear We viewed two contrasting leadership styles: one conductor ruled with intimidation, while another fostered collaboration and respect. No surprise—the second approach led to a far more engaged and inspired orchestra. The best leaders—whether on the podium or in the boardroom—bring people together, create clarity, and make space for talent to shine. What’s your leadership?tempo? ??? #Leadership #Teamwork #Orchestra #BusinessLessons #ConductingSuccess

And The Award Goes To! ?? Among the many celebrations throughout #Training2025, we also held our annual black tie APEX Awards Gala on Monday evening. With 95 L&D Teams honored for their highly-effective, highly-comprehensive training programs, it is here the rankings were revealed. Who is #1 for 2025? ?? ?? Congratulations to the team at ESL Federal Credit Union! ? As a financial services company, ESL knows the importance of investment—particularly investment in employee training and development. ESL was able to significantly increase its training budget in order to provide best-in-class training and development opportunities to its growing employee population (143 new hires last year), according to ESL Vice President/Director of Organizational Development & Culture, Julie Ahrens. As Ahrens notes, "it led to 2025 investments in new hire frontline training, leadership development coaching, training room infrastructure, system migration training, and an ongoing business transformation initiative." This win now makes ESL eligible for induction into the Training Hall of Fame in 2026 after four Top 10 rankings in a row. With the 2025 Training APEX Awards,?Training Magazine?proudly celebrates 25 years of recognizing excellence in employee training and development. We always value the experience of a first-time participant and we thank Megan R. Bell, MPM, PMP for her kind words (below ??) as a first-time presenter at #Training2025 - and for being one of our illustrious speakers. ? (Plus, enjoy her great reminders.) Her words truly humble us, as we love what we do, bringing everyone together!
?? A huge thank you to the speakers, attendees, and event team of the Training magazine's Annual Conference in sunny Orlando! ?? 2025 marked my first attendance at this conference, and being a speaker among such talented professionals was both exciting and a little intimidating—in the best way possible! This post is dedicated to everyone who attended my session, "In a World Competing for Audiences, You Need Presentation Skills," and who stayed afterward to continue sharing knowledge. I also want to extend my appreciation to the organizers for their hard work in assembling an event filled with countless sessions and a multi-day expo. Your efforts truly made a difference! ?? In my session, I discussed how trainers can learn from stand-up comedy to incorporate storytelling elements into their presentations. I encouraged my fellow trainers to shift their mindset from "pushing training on employees" to "pulling an audience in" to enhance engagement. Here are some of the tips I provided: **Body Language** - Be deliberate with your body language. - Smile and enjoy your time with the audience. **Voice** - A well-timed pause can help refocus your audience's attention on the content. - Practice projecting your voice to boost your confidence. **Audience Engagement** - Ask questions and learn from your audience. - Listen as much as you speak. **Bring your true self** - Emphasize storytelling. - Utilize the stage space effectively. To my fellow speakers: Your enthusiasm and passion for training, lifelong learning, and fostering career growth across different employee groups are truly inspiring. I hope to keep learning with you at the 2026 Training Magazine Annual Conference! ?? #Training2025 #LearningAndDevelopment #Training #Conference #TrainingMatters #TrainingAndDevelopment #corporatetraining #presentationskills
