Did you know Lake Winnipesaukee holds the title of New Hampshire’s deepest lake? Recent bathymetric mapping of Newfound Lake has settled a long-standing debate—Lake Winnipesaukee is indeed the deepest! But what is bathymetry? It’s the mapping of underwater terrain—like topography for the lakebed—crucial for navigation, habitat protection, and monitoring environmental changes. Lake Winnipesaukee was last comprehensively mapped in 1986 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), with additional focused surveys conducted in the years since. Bathymetric data like this is essential for understanding and preserving the health of our lake. #LakeWinnipesaukee #DeepestLakeNH #Bathymetry #LakeScience #LWA #PreserveOurLake

Lake Winnipesaukee holds a lifetime of stories—childhood summers spent on the water, generations of family traditions, and the subtle changes noticed over the years. These memories aren’t just nostalgia; they are snapshots of the lake’s evolving history, markers of change, and reminders of why protecting Winni matters. Jim, of Welch Island, has been a water quality monitor with LWA for over 10 years. He’s seen firsthand how the lake has changed since he first arrived. "When I compare the pristine conditions of the lake in 1955 to today's observations, you realize something has happened: no crayfish under and around the rocks and green slime on the rocks in August, for example. Working with LWA and seeing all the data—both in the long term and from site to site where the water samples are pulled—provides a better understanding of the lake’s condition. It provides a measuring stick for guiding corrective actions by the state, municipalities, and individuals." Jim’s story is just one of many. What’s yours? We want to hear from you. Share your Winni memories and observations by sending us a message or emailing brossiter@winnipesaukee.org for a chance to be featured in a future post. Because the more we share, the more we understand—and the stronger our commitment to protecting this place we all cherish. #VoicesOfTheLake ?#LakeWinnipesaukee?#ProtectWinni?#OurLakeOurFuture?#WinnipesaukeeReflections

Learning, Sharing, and Protecting Our Lake! Last week we headed up to Bartlett, NH, for the Northeast Aquatic Biologists (NAB) Conference—a few days packed with water science, lake management, and plenty of talk about cyanobacteria. It’s always great to connect with experts, learn new research, and bring fresh ideas back to Lake Winni! #LakeWinni #NABConference #WaterScience #ProtectTheLake #Cyanobacteria #OurLakeOurFuture

LWA and our team of volunteers are critical to monitoring the water quality of Lake Winnipesaukee. LWA has been monitoring water quality since 1982. The program tracks long-term trends, identifies early warning signs of potential issues, and provides critical data to calibrate lake management plans. Volunteers are the backbone of this effort. LWA recruits and trains monitors, offers technical support, coordinates sample transportation, and secures funding to sustain the program. We work very closely with the UNH Lakes Lay Monitoring Program (LLMP) which is jointly administered through the Cooperation Extension and the Center of Freshwater Biology in Durham, NH. To learn more about the program and how you can help, please contact our Conservation Program Manager, Bree Rossiter at brossiter@winnipesaukee.org.?
