Exciting News! We are so excited to share with you! For the third time in as many years, Mira and Deno, our breeding pair of cotton-top tamarins have expanded their family and this time, it's TWINS! On September 15th, a pair of twins were born to the cotton-top tamarin family at the Lake Superior Zoo. The whole family is taking part in the care of the newborns. Echo (2 year old female) and Tango (1 year old female) are learning vital parenting skills that are essential to the continuation of the species. In order to encourage the troop rest and allow quiet time for the infants to nurse, the lights in their habitat are on a 2 hour on/off schedule. At this time they are available for viewing from 12pm - 2pm, daily. The cotton-top tamarin is currently classified as critically endangered, with an estimated population of fewer than 2,000 mature individuals remaining in the wild. Their primary habitat is restricted to northern Colombia, where they face significant threats from habitat destruction due to deforestation and the illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts are critical to improving their status, as their populations continue to decline, underscoring the urgent need for protective measures to ensure their survival. Cotton-top tamarins are protected under the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a vital conservation program created by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to help protect endangered animals. The SSP focuses on carefully managing and breeding species in zoos to ensure they remain healthy and genetically diverse. Zoos work together to share information about animals and create breeding programs that help increase the population of endangered species. The SSP also includes efforts to educate the public about these animals and their habitats, so more people understand why conservation is important. By following this plan, zoos play a crucial role in saving species that are at risk of disappearing forever. The Lake Superior Zoo proudly participates in this program. Currently, there are 215 cotton-top tamarins in AZA accredited facilities worldwide, making this birth a significant contribution to their conservation. Today we had the opportunity to roll out the red carpet for someone special! Joel McKinnon Miller, a well known Minnesotan and Twin Ports resident, and his better half, came to the zoo for a VIP view. They helped feed otters, bears, lemurs, Zoozee and Twix (African cape porcupine). He also got to meet and learn about our education ambassador animals with our Outreach Programs Manager, Erin. Our staff had a lot of fun introducing them to the animal crew and highlighting our knowledgeable and incredible animal care team.
