From Pioneer to Patient – A Transplant Doctor’s Story ???? Dr. robert montgomery, Chairman & Professor of Surgery at NYU Langone Health, took us through his personal and professional journey — from his own heart transplant to his groundbreaking work in xenotransplantation and the urgent need for solutions to address organ shortages. The Lake Nona Impact Forum was honored to be the first public event to host a powerful conversation with Dr. Montgomery and Towana Looney, the longest-living xenotransplant recipient. They discussed their unique perspectives on the transformative power of organ transplantation and shared how Towana’s successful experience has inspired the first-ever pig organ transplant clinical trial, which will begin this year. ?? “I want you to look at me. If I can do it, the next person can do it.” - Towana Looney Their journeys highlighted how innovation and human connection are central to advancing transplant medicine and saving lives. Breaking Barriers with Brain Chips: The Future of Human Potential At #LNIF25, we witnessed firsthand how brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) push the boundaries of what’s possible in healthcare and human performance. From revolutionizing neurotechnology to offering new hope for mental health and neurodegenerative diseases, this session sparked big conversations about the future. ?? BCIs are no longer science fiction — they’re transforming lives today. Marcus Gerhardt, Co-founder & CEO of Blackrock Neurotech interviewed Nathan Copeland, Brain Computer Interface Research Pioneer, Blackrock Neurotech, about his experience with his brain computer implant. ?? "The very first BCI pioneer was in 2006, and today, we're on about 46 or 47. I don't think any of the discoveries of the last 10 years would have been possible without a human agreeing to do this. You can research this in models, animals, and non-human primates. That tends to be the transition, but at the end of the day, without being in the human brain, you will not discover the things we have discovered in the last 15 years." -Marcus Gerhardt The intersection of innovation, ethics and impact has never been more exciting. How do you see BCIs shaping the future of healthcare and beyond? #LNIF25 #Neurotech #BrainComputerInterface #HealthInnovation #FutureOfWellness

The GLP-1 Shift: Where Science Meets Lifestyle #LNIF25! The conversation around GLP-1 medications is evolving rapidly, and last week, industry leaders discussed their life-changing potential — from treating obesity and diabetes to emerging benefits that could reshape healthcare. ?? Approximately 26.2 million adults in the United States are undergoing treatment for type 2 diabetes. Around 5.1 million (19.4%) are using GLP-1's. Usage of these medications has been steadily rising — increasing from 5.2% to 9.9% between 2018 and 2022 among U.S. adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity. With John F. Crowley, President & CEO of Biotechnology Innovation Organization, leading the discussion, this session explored how science and lifestyle intersect to drive better health outcomes and long-term well-being. #LNIF25 #HealthTech #InnovationInHealthcare #FutureOfWellness

Breaking Barriers & Reaching for the Stars ? #LNIF25 Last week, we were honored to hear from Anousheh Ansari, PhD, a true pioneer in space exploration, innovation and leadership. As the CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation and the first female private space explorer, her journey is a testament to the power of curiosity, resilience and dreaming big. ?? "But as technology goes, it's always how we use them. It's not the technology that is good or bad, it's how we use them and how prepared we are. A lot of lines are being blurred now, and a lot of lines are crossing. So we have very difficult questions to answer." Her story reminds us that the impossible is just the starting line — whether in space, science or solving the world’s greatest challenges. #LNIF25 #SpaceToInspire #Innovation #BreakingBarriers

Our team left the Lake Nona Impact Forum feeling empowered, inspired, and deeply optimistic. The event highlighted the remarkable advancements in healthcare innovation and underscored our collective responsibility to shape its future. Our team—including Kellie Bliss, Nicole Turner, Jim Porter, Molly Lane, Patrick McGloin, and our CEO Stephanie Trunzo—shared these key insights: ?AI is revolutionizing medicine by enabling tools like DeepMind’s AlphaFold to map 200M protein structures and creating breakthroughs in oncology and immunology. A standout moment: an AI-created drug molecule in just 46 days, compared to years with traditional methods. ?Women’s health requires more attention. The event highlighted critical gaps in clinical research and the need to address how environmental factors and biology intersect to impact autoimmune diseases. ?Public health depends on unity and truth. Leaders discussed combating misinformation and the role of global organizations like the WHO in equitable care and pandemic defense. ?From lifespan to healthspan. The shift toward extending healthy years was punctuated by the launch of a $100M Healthspan XPRIZE to drive advancements in longevity research.
