I ended up writing about this year's Annual Lake James Clean-up. (The same lake where much of The Last of the Mohicans was filmed.) This effort included more than 75 high school student volunteers who gave up their Saturday to preserve one of the most beloved lakes in southern Appalachia. "This group is one of many who pick up trash along the shoreline and roads that run parallel to the more-than-a-century-old lake. If you didn’t see any of these passionate stewards throughout the year, you’d think the aquatic gem of Burke County remained pristine on its own. Sadly, an overabundance of litter ends up here. From abandoned car tires and fishing devices to beer bottles and cans, there’s a glut of non-recyclable food containers from nearby fast food chains and restaurants that have failed to shift to compostable or recyclable materials. . . . . . Climate change is a primary environmental concern voiced by many of these young people who are already living with the consequences of older generations refusing to evolve away from a petroleum-based economy." Shoutouts to Friends of Lake James, Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina, Community of Lake James, Catawba Riverkeeper, and LAKE JAMES ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATION for organizing this. #Appalachia #LocalJournalism #ClimateChange #Environmentalism
