“This critically important study is certainly timely," said LIN Senior Development Economist Heath Prince. But even in temperate environments, workers will struggle to maintain their income and provide for their families in the face of extreme heat. Businesses need to be prepared to address physical risks, too. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gk5jNwfd Image credit: the FAME Lab.

?? 16 million time-points were brought together by the FAME Lab in a new monumental study, which found that lost work time is lowest at 64°F/18°C. ?? For every degree above or below this optimal temperature, work time is lost at an increasing rate. ?? It was previously believed that thermal conditions were a problem only in very hot workplaces or countries. ??? But the study findings demonstrate that significant work time loss can occur even at temperate environments. ?? Read more: https://lnkd.in/gk5jNwfd

LIN researcher Dr. Barrak Alahmad awarded AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science. The recognition underscores the growing contribution to global heat stress research and data-driven solutions. Dr. Barrak Alahmad said, "Science is most powerful when it reaches beyond academia — shaping policies, protecting public health, and driving solutions to climate challenges." LIN CEO Jason Glaser said the award is testament to Dr. Alahmad's "ability to take academic research and translate it into a tangible public good — an invaluable skill befitting of the most adept scientists." ???????????? ???? ?????????????????? ?????????????????????? ???? ???????? ???????? ???????? There are moments in your career when you feel an extra sense of pride, and today is one of those days. Our study, which began as my first-ever research project in 2016 and involved nine years of data collection, is finally published. Hundreds of early mornings — waking up at 01:00, 02:00, 03:00, or 04:00 AM — just to be at the worksite before the shift started, ensuring everything was set up perfectly. Long days of data collection, followed by packing up and catching just a few hours of sleep before the next shift. Data were collected ???????????? ???????????????? ?????????????????? ??????????????????, involving ???????????????? ???? ??????????????, ???????? ?????? ???????? ????????????, ???? ?????????????????????????? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? and ???????? ???????? ???? ?????????????????? ??????????????????????. In total, over ???? ?????????????? ???????? ???????????? were video-recorded and analyzed ???????????? ???? ????????????. At the end of the day, every effort was worth it. Our findings now quantify the impact of workplace temperature - whether cold or hot - on work time loss. We reveal a U-shaped relationship: ? Congratulations, Barrak Alahmad! We can't think of a better recipient for this year's AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science. As a researcher with La Isla Network, your work has been instrumental to saving the lives of workers worldwide. Among other public engagement projects, Barrak—alongside Jacob “Juice” Berry, MD, MPH, SFS and others—pushed for stronger public health messaging for exertional heat stroke, known as HASTE. Honored to receive the 2025 AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science! In Kuwait, we showed how public health research can uncover population vulnerabilities to climate and associated health inequities. Science is most powerful when it reaches beyond academia, shaping policies, protecting public health, and driving solutions to climate challenges. A heartfelt thank you goes to institutions that believed and supported this work: Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), La Isla Network, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Dasman Diabetes Institute, Ministry of Health Kuwait, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Kuwait University, and Environment Public Authority - Kuwait. Their work continues to inspire commitment to research, public health, and environmental resilience in the Middle East. Looking forward to working with #AAAS, Theresa A Maldonado and Sudip Parikh to advancing science engagement in all communities!
