At today's COG Board meeting, area elected officials were briefed on the impacts of changes to the federal workforce in our region, which is home to 400K workers. The number is almost 700K statewide for DC, MD and VA combined. COG is sharing resources and comprehensive data to help support affected workers & communities. The Federal Planning Division (FPD) has made the difficult decision that we cannot operate the 2025 FPD Annual Training Workshop due to recent U. S. White House Administration Executive Orders that have suspended the use of civilian federal government travel cards, purchase cards, and made travel difficult for most federal agencies. We deeply regret the 2025 FPD Annual Training Workshop will be canceled. APA and FPD are exploring all options to offer valuable training and AICP maintenance credits. Updates will be shared, and you will be informed in advance of any opportunities. At today’s COG Board meeting, we had the distinct honor of recognizing more than 130 first responders for their extraordinary bravery and swift action in response to the tragic mid-air collision on January 29 near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The board received a detailed briefing on the remarkable coordination and urgency demonstrated by first responders from dozens of regional agencies, departments, and organizations in the DMV area who played a pivotal role in managing this crisis. Their heroic efforts exemplify the highest standards of public service and regionalism at its best.
