Lambda Alpha International, the Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land Economics, was founded in 1930 under the leadership of the renowned land economist and champion of academic freedom, Richard T. Ely. As an honorary society, it provides a forum for the study and advancement of land economics where the “winnowing and sifting” of ideas takes place in an atmosphere of mutual respect. The Chicago Region Chapter offers its members and guests -Informative and provocative monthly luncheons on key land use policies and new redevelopment projects; -Semi-annual Chautuaqua events offering in-depth, intimate discussions on timely topics; -Summer field trips allowing first-hand experiences of Chicago-land locations of interest to members; -An annual new member initiation gala; -Frequent opportunities for networking. Membership in the Chicago Region Chapter, as is with all Lambda Alpha International Chapters, is by invitation only. Current members in good standing nominate individuals who have extensive experience (at least 10 years) in the fields of land economics, architecture, engineering, real estate, planning, government, academia, real estate, land use and zoning law, etc. Additionally, to be accepted into Chicago Region Chapter membership individuals must have a demonstrated commitment to community through public service contributions. The Membership Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors reviews and recommends a slate of new members who are sworn in at the annual initiation banquet.

Lambda Alpha International - Chicago Region Chapter Chautauqua 2024 is a wrap! This year’s theme, Authenticity of Place, reflects how a community's character is shaped by its residents, businesses, and physical environment. We had community leaders from Highwood, the Far South Side, and Michigan City share how infrastructure and transportation improvements have impacted their land economics. Then in typical LAI tradition, we winnowed and sifted ideas on how to preserve community by safeguarding local needs while managing the impacts of new infrastructure and development. Our own Terry "Vic" Howell recently sat on an excellent panel with Lambda Alpha International (LAI), discussing the topic of Suburban Reinvention. Joined by Peggy Blanchard, John Lynch, and Mike Mallon CCIM, CRX the discussion explored several projects reshaping suburban environments, including the mall redevelopment projects Focus is currently delivering in Aurora, Vernon Hills and Skokie.
