April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual assault is not a women's problem, it is everyone's problem. In military culture specifically, 1 in 4 women Veterans and 1 in 100 Veteran men report experiencing MST. This is a very high percentage for women, BUT based on actual numbers, 40% of Veterans who disclose MST to the VA are men. EVERY survivor has a right to be believed and to receive appropriate care and support. Everyone else has a responsibility to get very clear on what constitutes sexual violence, and how not to make it worse for people who have experienced it. What's New: In a huge step forward, sexual assault is now tried outside of military chain of command. An office of Special Trial Counsel for each of the respective branches will now handle domestic violence, stalking, and most cases of sexual assault and other sexual misconduct.
