Latest update from Aetna, a CVS Health Company ??
I’m an Aetna member and an Aetna provider and I’m appalled at their new lactation coverage ?? On 3/19/24, Aetna internally changed their policy of “6, 100% covered lactation visits” to 6, 100% covered lactation CODES per rolling 12 month period for the lactating parent without letting anyone know. To make a 60-90+ minute appointment viable, lactation consultants need to bill 2 codes per appointment. This covers both the evaluation and education portions of the appointments. This policy of “100% covered” already only applied to the lactating parent, which caused cost sharing for the infant receiving human milk. What this means now is less appointments and even more cost sharing for a service that is mandated to be covered as preventative care for the duration of lactation. For comparison, all other commercial insurances allow as many appointments as medically necessary. Specialities that do have limits with some plans (think of physical therapy or acupuncture) tend to have at least 20 appointments minimum per year. Other specialities, like PT, also aren’t limited to 1 code per appointment. Shame on you Aetna, a CVS Health Company. Preventative care is there to save lives and cut costs in the short and long term. Instead your quarterly revenue is more important than providing ACA mandated care honorably for women, parents, and children

While we’re on the topic of paid maternity leave… “[L]onger maternity leave may decrease rates of maternal mental and physical health complaints. It was also found that longer maternity leave leads to more positive mother-child interactions, decreased infant mortality, and longer periods of breastfeeding.” https://lnkd.in/gfJZgzCq

More big news!! In Arizona, we will be in network with Oscar Health in mid April! This plan serves the individual exchange and small businesses - parents that may not get lactation support otherwise

NO state in the US lives up to this recommendation. “Six months of paid leave at 100% pay, or cash equivalent, should be available to mothers regardless of income, employment, or immigration status. At the very minimum, 18 weeks of fully paid leave should be granted. Partial pay for low-wage workers is insufficient.”
NEW POSITION STATEMENT: "Paid Maternity Leave — Importance to Society, Breastfeeding, and Sustainable Development" was just published in the Breastfeeding Medicine Journal advocating for six months of #paidmaternityleave. Read it here: https://buff.ly/48ZxlS3
