Join us to prepare for expected policy changes to business, family, humanitarian and removal cases under a second Trump Administration. While we learned during the last administration that there is no way to anticipate all of the changes, Trump’s prior proposals, his recent rhetoric, and Project 2025 provide hints about what the new Administration will try to do. We will review these changes with you and provide guidance to protect your clients now. https://lnkd.in/gAiXzmW3

Justice Starts Here. Last year, CFJ helped over 9,000 people navigate legal challenges, from domestic violence restraining orders to eviction defense and immigration cases. This Giving Tuesday, we’re asking the legal community to join us in expanding that impact. Every dollar fuels justice. Join us to create a more just L.A. https://lnkd.in/gUhiwkaD

Another fantastic Los Angeles County Bar Association Family Law Section Executive Committee (FLEXCOM) meeting lead by our 2024-2025 Chair Dena A. Kleeman and the Chair Elect Brian Lepak. Our Los Angeles Superior Court Family Law Department Supervising Judge the Hon. Shelley Kaufman and our Assistant Supervising Judge the Hon. Firdaus Dordi explained to the Executive Committee that effective April 1, 2025 Dissomaster will no long be certified for use by the Court. The Court is exploring other options for the calculation of guideline child and spousal support, and an announcement will be made soon. The LACBA FLEXCOM is hard at work as a Justice Partner in the delivery of Family Law Service in Los Angeles County.

The Los Angeles County Bar Association held its annual Complex Courts Symposium this week, and it was a smashing success -- over 450 people came to learn how California state courts handle class actions, mass torts, and similar cases. Most notably, LA Superior Court Judge Lawrence Riff condemned the practice of mediators providing "Fairness Declarations" in connection with preliminary approvals of class settlements. He's right. It's a corrupt practice. Essentially, it entails a mediator declaring that people who are paying him (the named plaintiffs and the defendants) are being fair to people who are not paying him (the absent class members). The folly of it is obvious, and every judge on the dais with Judge Riff agreed. Actually, it's not news. John (Jay) McCauley and I condemned the practice in 2009. You can read our article, "The Fairness Declaration: A Senseless Practice," by following the link in the comments. Class actions and mass torts are among the most challenging and rewarding cases to mediate. I love them. As long as they are mediated ethically.
