We looked at the FDA's new quality management system regulations and found something odd: It might disproportionately impact smaller labs as opposed to bigger labs. From what we found, there was a removal of an exemption that protected management reviews, quality audits, and supplier audit reports from FDA inspections. This should not a big deal for most commercial lab test manufacturers, they should already provide these records during ISO audits. On the other end, it may be a big deal for labs with limited funding. With LDTs now classified as medical devices, smaller labs might suddenly face the same stringent management requirements as large manufacturers.
