Histoplasma capsulatum is a microfungus that is endemic to most of the U.S. The fungus thrives in matter with high nitrogen content like bird manure. Local outbreaks are usually correlated to the disturbance of roosting sites (building renovations), which can produce many airborne fungal spores. Histoplasmosis can be acute, chronic, or disseminated. Most will feel the acute flu-like symptoms, but chronic histoplasmosis is a disease that can reactivate years and even decades after initial exposure. Disseminated histoplasmosis can be life-threatening and is considered a serious fungal infection to those with weakened immune systems or individuals under two years of age.
