The Trump administration’s Registration Requirement for most undocumented immigrants is another hateful tactic in its campaign to cause panic and fear throughout the country. In simple terms, Registration is a dangerous tool used by authoritarian governments to target marginalized communities. The ILRC is analyzing the Registration Requirement and will update with more information as needed. Right now, this is what you should know: 1?? Registration has been announced but a process has not officially been put in place as of February 28, 2025. 2?? Talk to a trusted legal representative before you make any decisions about registration. 3?? Know your rights! Everyone in the US, regardless of status, has rights under the Constitution, including the right to remain silent. 4?? Many individuals do not need to take steps now– they are already registered (if you are a permanent resident, have a work permit, or came with a visa, for example). Confirm with a trusted and qualified legal representative (Find support in your area at: ilrc.me/findhelp). The last time the federal government used Registration was after Sept. 11, 2001, requiring men from mainly Muslim majority countries to register with the government. The National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), is widely considered to be a notorious racial profiling program that succeeded only in ripping families apart and creating chaos and distrust in Muslim and immigrant communities. We cannot let history repeat itself, and urge all to stand together strong against efforts to normalize a police state in this country.

This week Congress is taking up the Laken-Riley Act, a bill that exploits tragedy to drastically expand mandatory detention and facilitate mass deportations by further weaponizing the criminal punishment system. It will lead to many more people being detained without access to bond and will have a disproportionate impact of Indigenous, Black, and brown migrants and immigrants.
