Smile, sparkle, shine, gets them every time!” Last week, the Walden Grove High School PAC Dance Team brought energy, rhythm, and intergenerational joy to La Posada Adult Day Services. With every twirl, step, and groove, these talented dancers didn’t just perform—they connected with our seniors. As the beats of California Gurls and APT filled the room, generations came together, learning that dance is more than movement—it’s a language of expression, storytelling, and community. Seniors discovered how today’s dancers communicate using hand gestures and rhythmic motion, proving that music and movement have the power to unite regardless of the era. When people learn together, they grow together. Dance builds confidence, creates bonds, and bridges generations in ways words cannot. Life of the Mind is a stellar journey through lifelong learning for La Posada residents, offering seminars that span the humanities, sciences, public policy, and the ever-evolving landscape of the Southwest. As astronomers peer into the depths of space to uncover new celestial bodies, our residents explore fresh perspectives through interactive presentations, hands-on demonstrations, and engaging local excursions. What Did Life of the Mind Students Explore in February? Just as astronomers scan the skies for hidden objects in the solar system, researchers at the University of Arizona have been charting the paths of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), asteroids, and comets that drift close to Earth’s orbit. To date, over 1.4 million asteroids have been identified, most revealed by NASA-sponsored sky surveys, much like how a telescope sharpens its gaze on the mysteries of the night sky. These cosmic wanderers are influenced by the gravitational pull of nearby planets, nudging them into orbits that occasionally bring them close to Earth. While most space dust burns up harmlessly in our atmosphere, every 10,000 years or so, a large asteroid about the size of a city may impact the planet, causing local destruction or even triggering a massive tidal wave. Every few million years, a colossal impactor, over a kilometer wide, has the potential to shift Earth’s history on a global scale, an event that astronomers work tirelessly to predict and, perhaps one day, prevent. Ed Beshore, former director of the University of Arizona’s Catalina Sky Survey, guided residents through the fascinating process of asteroid detection. He discussed Arizona’s leading role in discovering and tracking these celestial travelers and shed light on future missions to protect Earth from potential impactors, an effort as ambitious as humanity’s quest to explore the stars. The 2025 Concerts For A Better Community benefits La Posada Community Services, which offers low-cost programs open to the public and aims to connect people to a better life through intergenerational interactions, education, and caring support. La Posada Community Services serves the Green Valley - Sahuarita area with Adult Day Services, Los Ni?os del Valle Preschool & Child Care Center, and a thriving Community Center with a well-attended Senior Lunch program. La Posada Community Services provides the invaluable gift of time to its participants. The Senior Lunch program offers time to enjoy a nutritious meal while socializing with others. At our preschool, students and parents benefit from time in a learning curriculum, making their children curious about their world. Through Adult Day Services, family members gain the time they need to run essential errands, explore personal interests, or take a break, with the reassurance that their loved ones are receiving quality care. “ I am sorry I didn’t do this sooner.” We often hear this from La Posada and new off-campus residents moving into the La Joya Assisted Living neighborhood. Last Friday, La Posada hosted a La Joya Open House, during which independent living residents could ask nursing staff questions about living in the La Joya neighborhood. After a delicious culinary spread, residents took tours and explored the different apartments. More than 100 La Posada residents attended this open house to better understand assisted living and how this option improves their retirement choices. The La Posada at Green Valley campus is like a small town, offering many options, activities, and venues for residents to explore daily. Many living here fail to recall all the services available to independent and assisted living residents. The La Joya Open House is an excellent way for current residents to rediscover the choices available to them on our campus. What did La Posada residents learn from the La Joya Open House? - The La Joya assisted living apartments look very much like the independent apartments, offering several models to meet particular needs and lovely inside and outside common areas where residents can meet their neighbors and do activities of their choosing, such as card games, puzzles, etc. - The La Joya dining room seats 60 people and offers different menu options not found in independent living dining rooms. If you are a present La Posada resident, dining in the La Joya dining room is an option. All present La Posada independent residents must make a reservation to dine in the La Joya dining room. - La Joya residents don’t have to travel to the fitness pavilion and other buildings on the campus for fitness and lifestyle activities. They can stay in their neighborhood and attend activities planned by a full-time La Joya activities coordinator, meeting physical, social, and mental needs. La Joya residents are offered 40-plus exercises, games, and special events, such as a Luau, Christmas, Easter, and Valentine’s Day parties, La Posada Anniversary and Birthday luncheons, and off-campus outings. - Housekeeping, the La Joya library, on-campus transportation, and tricycles are available to La Joya residents - La Joya residents actively participate in the resident's council and community volunteerism.
