  • Did you know? #ObstetricAnesthesia was the foundation of Kybele’s mission. Kybele’s founder, Dr. Medge Owen, received a Fulbright Association scholarship in 1997 (pictured in first photo) to teach obstetric anesthesia and neonatal resuscitation in Turkey. That started a career-long passion for improving medical care for pregnant women wherever they were, and Owen founded Kybele a few years later to forward that mission. Since that time, Kybele has been training medical professionals and developing curriculum to improve obstetric anesthesia care in the Balkans. We spearhead an Annual School of Obstetric Anesthesia that provides hands-on training in the latest obstetric anesthesia techniques to anesthesiology faculty members and residents. While a lot of the new work Kybele does now is in the areas of obstetric triage and advanced care for newborns, obstetric anesthesiology is still an important part of our mission to improve childbirth safety around the world. #ChildbirthSafety #MaternalHealth #MedicalEducation #GlobalHealth #AnesthesiaTraining #NeonatalCare

  • When Kybele joined the Making Every Baby Count Initiative (MEBCI) in Ghana, the reason was clear: reducing the mortality rate of newborns. In Ghana, > 50% of deaths in children under five years old are babies who are less than 28 days old. The MEBCI program tackles that statistic head-on, providing training in advanced neonatal care, improving hospital systems, and supplying vital pieces of equipment. Working with Ghana Health Service and funded by @children's-investment-fund-foundation-ciff, Kybele is helping to improve the quality of care that newborns receive–because every baby counts. It’s a common conundrum in training: How do you ensure that change continues long after the trainers have left? The Obstetric Triage Implementation Package (OTIP) trains frontline medical professionals in Ghana in important triage skills that change how women and babies are cared for during the time surrounding childbirth. One of OTIP’s distinctives is the model it uses to train those medical professionals: Kybele trains a group of National Champions in Ghana. National champions train a group of clinical champions in each medical facility. Clinical champions train relevant staff within their specific facility. By giving clinical champions the skills to train staff in their facility, the continuation of the program is in the hands of the people who see these patients every day, and isn’t reliant upon outside trainers. The gap between research and practice is well-documented. But when that gap widens due to obstacles like lack of resources or access to training, the results are heartbreaking. Kybele was founded after Dr. Medge Owen witnessed firsthand how wide the gap between medical knowledge and practice can be in various contexts around the world. For over 20 years, Kybele has been dedicated to identifying and addressing gaps in care for both women and babies during childbirth. Learn more about how Kybele closes the gaps between medical knowledge and application with easy, affordable solutions that save lives on our website. #HealthcareInnovation #GlobalHealth #MaternalHealth #ChildbirthEducation #AccessToCare #PublicHealthImpact

You’re in a busy obstetric ward in a low-resourced area. How do you communicate a patient’s condition in a clear, effective way to all the medical professionals in the area? Wristbands. The Obstetric Triage Implementation Package (OTIP) uses color-coded wristbands to communicate a patient’s condition. ?? Green means good. The mother’s condition is stable, and there are no concerning vital signs or flagged risks. ?? Yellow means monitor. There is no imminent risk to either mother or baby, but her vital signs or risk conditions bear watching so that no complications develop. ?? Red means urgent. There’s something serious happening that needs immediate attention. This wristband is a ticket to the top of the triage list. While simple, this banding procedure has saved numerous lives. It’s a quick, efficient way to communicate the severity of symptoms and to get treatment for the women and babies who need it most. The mission to improve safety in pregnancy and childbirth for mothers and babies across the world doesn’t happen in a void. It grows out of key partnerships, with each partner playing their role in sustaining our mission. ?? Local Healthcare Every country Kybele works in starts with developing relationships with health agencies or hospital leaders, the gateways to medical care. We form close relationships with individual hospitals and medical facilities, where our teams meet patients and train and equip the medical professionals who directly care for mothers and babies. ??Clinical Experts We work with a wide network of clinical experts, medical professionals in a variety of fields–obstetrics, neonatology, anesthesia–who can be called off the bench to help a project when their expertise is needed. Sometimes this involves traveling to mentor in-country medical professionals and sometimes that means developing training programs that can be used wherever needed. ?? Kybele The Kybele organization is made up of full-time and volunteer staff, who provide the infrastructure that supports the mission. From producing programs and connecting stakeholders, to applying for grants and handling logistics, our staff works hard to cultivate research and relationships that make a difference. ?? Funders Our life-saving work is made possible by the generosity of a variety of grants, funding organizations, and individual donors. Whether an individual giving a couple hundred dollars or a funding organization providing the means for a multi-million dollar project, each cares deeply about improving the lives of mothers and babies the world over. #PregnancySafety #ChildbirthAwareness #MaternalHealthMatters #GlobalHealthPartnerships #HealthcareCollaboration #NonprofitImpact
