KW New Orleans’ Talk: Crime Prevention and Community Collaboration Jeffrey Doussan and Daniel Shanks shake hands after a conversation on crime prevention in the New Orleans community on 11/13/2024 With special guest Daniel Shanks, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office Why it matters: At KW New Orleans, we’re more than just real estate professionals?—?we’re committed to shaping a safer, thriving city. This week, we welcomed Daniel Shanks, the Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, to share insights on innovative crime prevention methods. With crime reduction a pressing issue in New Orleans, Shanks discussed his work to break the cycle of crime through a blend of data-driven analysis and community collaboration. Understanding the “Why” Behind?Crime Shanks emphasized that reducing crime in New Orleans takes more than arrests; it’s about tackling environmental and social factors that breed violence. By mapping “hotspot” areas and analyzing the relationship between these spaces and crime, Shanks and his team target the root?causes. “Our focus goes beyond the individual incident. We’re looking at the conditions that make crime more likely, and we’re using data to guide us in tackling these issues at the source,” Shanks explained. This involves risk terrain modeling, a system that pinpoints areas with higher risks of crime based on factors like abandoned buildings, unlit streets, and unregulated businesses. Using this model, the DA’s office has reduced incidents in areas like Claiborne and Esplanade. Collaboration with Community and Law Enforcement A central pillar of Shanks’ approach is collaboration. Through weekly meetings with police, probation officers, and other agencies, the DA’s office shares information to coordinate efforts. “It’s not just about who commits a crime, but where and why. Collaboration is key. By bringing every agency to the table, we can respond in real-time, focusing on locations and preventing crime before it happens,” Shanks?noted. Shanks highlighted the program’s success by sharing how consistent meetings have allowed them to coordinate sweeps in high-crime areas, ensure legal action against problem properties, and engage federal support in operations that might be outside local resources. Listening to the Community Shanks stressed that community input is crucial. The DA’s office doesn’t just rely on data alone?—?they reach out to residents, local leaders, and community organizations to understand issues that data can’t?reveal. “We don’t want to simply rely on maps; we’re listening to residents who live in these areas every day. They can tell us what our numbers can’t,” Shanks?said. By engaging with churches, neighborhood leaders, and residents, Shanks and his team have enacted practical changes, from adding streetlights to providing spaces for youth programs. These efforts are tailored to community needs, with long-term result
