In February, our Project Management Interns, Jaiden Mitchell, Noah Ambos, Thomas Silloway, and Spencer Odendahl, spent the day at our Port Clinton Shop and Training Facility, gaining real-world experience with the tools, equipment, and processes that drive Kwest Group forward. Dylan Drake, our small tools expert, provided an in-depth look at the hand tools and attachments that keep our teams efficient. Under the guidance of Dean Martin, our learning and development coordinator, the interns explored yellow iron, learning its capabilities and impact on job site timelines. They also sharpened their skills on the CAT Excavator Simulator, bringing their learning full circle! This experience was all about bridging the gap between planning and execution, giving our future leaders firsthand knowledge of the equipment they’ll be scheduling and budgeting for. As we close out Women in Construction Week, we’re proud to spotlight Maria Espinoza, a laborer on our concrete crews whose dedication and leadership embody the strength of women in this industry. Maria was inspired to join construction to be closer to her husband and learn more about his career. Now, she works side by side with him, proving that determination and hard work know no limits. ?? What safety means to her? “Protecting myself and others from getting hurt.” ?? How she leads in safety? “Making sure the crew follows the rules, wears PPE, and leading by example.” ?? Biggest challenge? “Thinking I couldn’t do a ‘man’s job’ but I’ve proven I can. I may not be the fastest, but I never give up.” ?? Advice for women? “Don’t be afraid, take the risk! Meet Polet Garza, a laborer on our concrete crews who brings passion, skill, and determination to every project. She entered construction to build tangible things and see the direct impact of her work and she hasn’t looked back. ?? What she loves most? “The camaraderie, the daily challenges, and the satisfaction at the end of each project.” ?? Her safety mindset? “It’s not just about rules, it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels secure and confident.” ?? Her #1 safety tip? “Never rush, no matter the pressure.” ?? Biggest challenge? “The presumption that construction is a ‘man’s world.’ I’ve proven my skills are defined by my dedication, not my gender.” ?? Meet Jaiden Mitchell, a Project Intern who will be joining Kwest Group full-time in May! Her journey started in mechanical engineering, shifted to architecture, and eventually led her to construction, where she found a passion for seeing projects come to life. ?? What she loves most? “Watching jobs go from plans to reality in a team setting.” ?? Her take on safety? “In the office, safety is about mindset - it must always be considered, even if we’re not wearing hard hats and boots.” ?? Biggest challenge? “Being in male-dominated spaces can be tough, but knowing I’m capable and qualified pushes me past obstacles.” ?? Advice for women in construction? “Never be afraid to speak up! Your voice belongs here.” For Jaiden, Women in Construction Week is about feeling seen. From being the only woman in her high school engineering classes to now becoming an essential team member, her journey proves that women belong in construction. Fun fact? She owns a 1973 Plymouth Fury 3 and loves taking it to car shows - another male-dominated space where she shows up and stands out!
