This Latine Heritage month, we're highlighting young activists (aka Fearless Girls!) from the Latine diaspora. First up, Sophie Cruz! ??? Meet Sophie Cruz, one of the world's youngest activists for immigrants' rights. At just 5 years old, Sophie made headlines by handing Pope Francis a letter pleading for help to keep immigrant families together. Since then, she's spoken at the Women's March in Washington D.C. and advocated tirelessly for immigration reform. Sophie's passion has inspired millions and given hope to families across the nation. She continues to be a powerful voice for change, using her platform to educate others about immigration issues and the importance of keeping families together. ?? A recent report on NYC schools reveals a concerning trend: despite outperforming boys academically, girls report significantly lower levels of satisfaction with their school experiences. As an educator committed to girls' education, I see the study as a powerful call to action - and a powerful reminder of the vital role girls' schools play in fostering not just academic success, but overall well-being. Research from the International Coalition of Girls' Schools paints a starkly different picture for girls' outcomes: ???? Connection: 90% of girls' school students feel supported by their peers, compared to 73% of girls at coed schools. ???? Confidence: 84% of girls' school graduates report feeling "great" about themselves in college. ?? Voice: 87% of girls' school students feel their opinions are respected, versus only 58% at coed schools. ?? STEM confidence: Girls' school graduates report significantly higher confidence in their science abilities compared to coed peers. At Kwenda Collegiate Girls , we're building on these proven strengths of girls' schools. We prioritize: ?? Creating a supportive community where every girl feels seen, heard, and valued ?? Proactively addressing mental health through social-emotional supports ?? What is a #feminist school, really? ? At Kwenda, we think it's rather simple: one that empowers all of our girls and gender expansive youth to lead fully self-determined lives—full of promise, wonder, and ease. We want all of our kids to be free - full stop. We're inspired by some of the OG feminist thinkers, deriving hope and inspiration from the likes of this week's feature - the Combahee River Collective. Combahee highlighted the importance of intersectionality, emphasizing that race, gender, sexuality, and class are interconnected systems of oppression.
