Innovation knows no gender, but bias does. At KUMPUL, we believe in access for all, regardless of gender or ethnicity. Everyone deserves the opportunity to grow. Our ecosystem includes 4 Women's Innovation programs, 73 women-led startups, and 500 women-led MSMEs, all driving inclusive innovation in entrepreneurship. Despite countless limitations, women continue to rise, stepping out of the shadows and lighting the way for others. A study by the EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology shows that the number of women-led startups is increasing globally. Between 2010 and 2022, the percentage of women founders in tech startups doubled from 7% to 14%. In Indonesia, 64.5% of entrepreneurs are women-led, according to Kementerian Koperasi dan Usaha Kecil & Menengah (UKM) (2021). At the same time, initiatives to supporting women's innovation, such as Perempuan Bijak Berusaha, InnovateHer, SheHacks, and many more, continue to grow. However, significant challenges still exist for women entrepreneurs: 1. Access to capital & mentors Limited access restricts business growth and keeps many women-led ventures in small-scale and informal sectors. 2. Gender bias The perception that women are less competent in leadership hinders opportunities for business expansion. 3. Traditional roles Balancing domestic and professional responsibilities limits women's time and energy to focus on their businesses. Yet, women remain resilient. Celebrating 10 Years of KUMPUL: A Journey of Impact, Growth, and Endless Possibilities Today marks a significant milestone — KUMPUL turns 10. A decade ago, I embarked on a journey with a small vision: to create a lasting impact for Indonesia and build a better ecosystem for future generations of entrepreneurs. Back then, I was just a non-profit staff in Bali, witnessing firsthand how aid and donor-reliance were not sustainable solutions. I knew that if we wanted true economic empowerment for Indonesia, we needed to build an initiative grounded in sustainability. The gap was undeniable, and I thought, "Why should we rely on the growth of this country solely on 'anak Jaksel'?" But 10 years ago, I had no network in big corporations or government circles. All I had was my savings—savings I had originally intended to use to build my home. With that, I took the leap. I started by opening a small coworking space called KUMPUL—a place to test, learn, and uncover the real challenges and bottlenecks that entrepreneurs face in Indonesia. I held onto one core belief: “Talents are universal, opportunities are not.” And so, KUMPUL was born with a vision to democratize access for entrepreneurs: access to networks, capacity-building, expert mentorship, markets, funding, and, most importantly, a thriving ecosystem of support. Over the years, we’ve been privileged to work alongside partners who shared our vision, believed in our mission, and invested in KUMPUL even before we could prove our worth. Together, we’ve built something truly special. Fast forward to today, and what began as a small idea has now grown into a super connector for the entrepreneurial ecosystem. KUMPUL has helped connect 57,000 startups and 82,000 MSMEs, opening doors for growth, collaboration, and scale. We have fostered partnerships and created opportunities that reach both local communities and the global stage. Looking ahead, we will continue to focus on scaling our Impact and Venture arms, leveraging our insights to empower businesses—from the grassroots level to our global network.
