Kumair offers composites engineering and manufacturing for a wide variety of applications. With decades of experience in both engineering and manufacturing, Kumair specializes in both traditional and exotic carbon fiber composites design, including the exclusive metal core composites only available from Kumair. Kumair helps organizations integrate carbon fiber composites into designs that may not traditionally include carbon fiber. In addition to carbon fiber manufacturing, Kumair offers engineering design and analysis services, as well as CNC machining through company partner Pemberton Raceworks. Kumair specializes in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of a wide variety of systems, as well as CAD design and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

    Kumair is excited to announce that our new custom-built hydraulic platen press is fully operational. This new press will allow us to achieve much higher pressures and make larger panels. The platens are 0.75m x 1.5m (about 29" x 59"). Available hydraulics is up to 200 tons, or 440,000 lbs of force. This allows us to achieve surface pressures of over 10 times that of conventional vacuum bagging. The result is that we can manufacture carbon fiber panels with much higher fiber to resin ratio, and thus superior mechanical properties. For example, whereas a laminate that may have four or five plies in it using a vacuum bag process, we can put six plies of carbon fiber, thus substantially increasing the stiffness and strength of the part.     It is always exciting to see other people continuing your own work. Many years ago we invented a new type of integrated cross-flow fan propulsion and wing configuration and demonstrated it flying. Since then, there have been many efforts around the world to continue this work. The links below are to a couple of patents that use the thick wing and cross-flow fan propulsion design we developed.     Our brand new custom built hydraulic heated platen press just arrived. It should be operational shortly, and with 200 tons of force (over 400,000 lbs), we will not only be able to make larger epoxy matrix carbon fiber panels, but the new press will also enable us to make some very interesting other types of composite materials that require much higher pressure than standard carbon fiber layups.     Thermal expansion is a big issue when mixing carbon fiber composites with metal or non-fiber reinforced plastics. The CTE mismatch can cause major issues when there are large temperature swings. It is important to take this into account whenever building an assembly that utilizes composites. Carbon fiber may save weight, but if not engineered properly can bring in unforeseen problems once the system is in use. https://lnkd.in/e-_-q3Y3 #composites #engineering
