Tuesday Thoughts ?? Understanding and addressing the needs of underrepresented groups within your organization is vital in creating a workplace culture of belonging. Within organizations, leaders should be committed to advancing a workplace culture that is diverse and inclusive. To make this possible, old ways of operating within the organization must be re-evaluated and sunsetted. By constructing an inclusive workplace culture that provides the necessary resources and supports for all individuals to thrive, leaders will see a more productive and healthy workforce. In her 2024 article A New Era of EDI Work, Lucy Tu reports on a Pew Research Center survey of 5,902 workers conducted in 2023, which found that a majority of employees in workplaces offering Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) resources felt these initiatives had positively impacted their work environment. Disaggregate Data: Collect and analyze data by race, ethnicity, gender, and other dimensions. Identify disparities and set measurable goals. 4. Intersectionality: Recognize how interlocking systems of power (e.g., racism, sexism, ableism) intersect with multiple social identities (such as race, gender, and disability) to shape distinct experiences and challenges. Today, I witnessed a powerful conversation about belonging and inclusion during a staff meeting. While some staff members expressed how much they feel they belong, others pointed out the gaps in support for diverse perspectives and the visible absence of initiatives that affirm underrepresented communities. Today’s conversation was a reminder that fostering a true sense of belonging requires more than a shared space- it requires shared responsibility, visible action, and an institutional commitment to change. For those who are often expected to “step up” to drive DEI initiatives, the burden can feel isolating. Without active support from leaders, we risk leaving the work of inclusion to those already underrepresented and missing out on building environments that truly serve everyone. In advising, mentoring, and connecting with students and employees on academic and career goals, professional growth and development repeatedly comes up in conversations. ??Retaining your people is vital for any organization to thrive and reach new heights. ?? Most employees prefer to stay with their company, valuing the predictability and comfort of familiar environments. However, if they encounter stagnation and limited opportunities for advancement, leaving may become the only viable option for continued growth. ?? In a 2023 report by McKinsey and Company, “A reputation for a strong culture of people development can make all the difference for companies in a tight labor market. Organizations that make learning and development a priority and a part of their mission can create a virtuous cycle and improve the odds of success in attracting, advancing, and retaining talent.” Not only that, but the firm revealed that, “Our research shows that fostering a growth mindset among leaders and employees -for example, by providing training and internal advancement opportunities- is a cornerstone of effective organizations.” In a recent conversation with a mid-level manager at a large-size company, she expressed that she was unsure if pursuing her advanced degree would be the right choice for her since her manager was unsupportive of this choice. For her, the additional degree would make her competitive and provide additional career options within the company. However, when she brought this to her manager, she was told that an advanced degree wasn’t necessary for her current role. ?? Let’s stop here ??
