关于我们

Kua?āina Ulu ?Auamo (KUA) means “grassroots growing through shared kuleana (responsibility)” the acronym KUA means backbone. KUA, called into creation in 2011 by a statewide network of over 30+ grassroots indigenous and local community based natural resource management groups called E Alu Pū (“move forward together”) works to empower communities to improve their quality of life through caring for their environmental heritage together to better Hawai?i and achieve ‘āina momona— an abundant, productive ecological system that supports community well-being. KUA employs a community‐driven approach that currently supports three statewide networks: E Alu Pū, almost 40 traditional Hawaiian fishpond projects and practitioners called the Hui Mālama Loko I?a, and a new and growing group of Limu (native seaweed) practitioners called the Limu Hui.

  • Check these out! Sounds interesting and our tita Pua'ala Pascua is presenting tomorrow: Title: Are you for real right now? One strengths-focused approach to remembering, reimagining, and realizing ancestral resilience in times of uncertainty ? In a time being characterized by unprecedented use of the term unprecedented, it’s increasingly clear that we need to create and support intentional spaces to reflect on and to reimagine our future, together. Through audience participation and interaction, this presentation invites attendees to reflect on our strengths at individual, community, and regional scales to inform our approach and response to the current landscape. I’ll share a separate, but related, compilation of needs and priorities in community-centered stewardship and restoration born from a shared dream space with community stewardship practitioners from across the pae?āina. Finally, I’ll conclude by illuminating selected examples of ongoing and forthcoming efforts to catalyze and mobilize shared goals in ahupua?a stewardship and restoration. ? Bio:?Pua?ala Pascua is the Coordinator of the Ahupua?a Accelerator Initiative. Born and raised on O?ahu and currently residing on Hawai?i Island, Pua?ala specializes in locally and culturally attuned approaches to natural resource management. She holds a master’s degree in Natural Resource and Environmental Management from the University of Hawai?i at Mānoa and bachelor’s degrees in Hawaiian Studies and Marine Science from the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. Perhaps most importantly, she reports directly to two tiny humans who are present and timely reminders of why we do what we do.

  • Grant opportunity pass it on!! The Native American Agriculture Fund announced an opportunity for funding available to support communities/programs that primarily serve/include native Hawaiian communities and work in agriculture. The definition of agriculture is pretty broad and includes all that USDA includes including fishing. The USDA defines agriculture as the practice of growing crops and raising animals for food and other products. This could include fishponds. The application period is open now – opened March 1 and is open until May 1. These are grants so goes to 501c3, but also schools and CDFIs. There is a general program and one focused on youth and orgs can apply to both. They can also apply as a collaborative and/or on their own. Funds can be used for pretty much anything including purchasing land, personnel and re-granting including to individuals. Looking at about $100k-$250k grant size although they did a $50k one before in Hawai‘i. Generally set at 1 or 2 year term. They anticipate about $1m available for Hawai‘i this year but see it growing towards possibility of $4-5m in future years. The information and connection to the online application starts here: https://lnkd.in/gun6bZWt

  • Check out "Outside Hawaii," featuring a number of members of the Maui Nui Makai Network and E Alu Pu! "In uncertain times, it's common to hear people talk of distrust leading to fear and conflict. Trust is the glue that holds communities together, and building that trust requires a genuine commitment to the well-being of the community as a whole. On this episode of Outside Hawai?i, we'll explore community-led conservation efforts, including the Maui Navigation Team – community volunteers who are passionate about protecting Maui’s nearshore resources. We'll learn about the Lindsay ?Ohana’s generational kuleana toward ?āina, and we’ll visit a school nurturing both trees and students." https://lnkd.in/gHGu9yDC
