The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has unveiled a new plan to strengthen its partnerships with Native American tribes and foster the development of more sustainable food systems within tribal communities. This initiative recognizes the vital role tribes play in managing and stewarding natural resources, particularly in the West, where nearly half of the 574 federally recognized tribes reside and oversee over 55 million acres of land. ?? : A community corn field at the Jemez Pueblo in north-central New Mexico, seen here on March 17, 2023. A steering committee is forming in Colorado to investigate the state's history of federal Indian boarding schools, a dark chapter in American history. HB24-1444, the Federal Indian Boarding School Research Program, mandates research into the abuse and deaths that occurred at these institutions. History Colorado will lead the effort, seeking a leader for the research program and forming a steering committee with survivors and other stakeholders. The committee will investigate the locations of these schools, search for potential remains and belongings, and collect testimonies from survivors and their families. Two prominent boarding schools in Colorado were the Teller Institute and the Fort Lewis Indian Boarding School. These institutions aimed to forcibly assimilate Indigenous children, stripping them of their culture and language. Survivors describe horrific experiences, including physical and emotional abuse, cultural suppression, and the loss of their native languages. This initiative is part of a larger national movement to address the historical trauma of Indian boarding schools. President Biden recently apologized for the government's role in these institutions. The Colorado steering committee will play a crucial role in documenting this dark period in the state's history and supporting healing within the affected communities. ?? In this election, Colorado voters had the opportunity to engage with 14 statewide ballot questions. Among these, seven proposed constitutional amendments were presented, each requiring a 55% majority to pass. This process highlights the importance of civic participation in shaping our state's future. Every vote counts! ??
