The only US nonprofit solely dedicated to protecting a critically endangered species, one African penguin at a time.

关于我们

We are the only US 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated solely to protecting critically endangered African penguins from extinction. We raise awareness in the Global North for our partners and feathered friends in the Global South through educational programs, outreach efforts via presentations both in person and on the web, and raising funds for: * bolstering the chick population, rearing abandoned or lost chicks, and incubating eggs—a vital part of the African Penguin Biodiversity Management Plan; * paying the salary of African penguin rangers; * rehabilitating injured, ill, or oiled birds; * responding to emergencies or time-sensitive needs, including providing needed equipment; * advocating for increased Marine Protection Areas to protect the ecosystem African penguins need to thrive and * equipping African penguin populations with artificial nests. African penguins are a significant economic asset, contributing R613 million-R4.5 billion ($35 million-$259 million) to the South African economy yearly and creating almost 5,000 jobs. Should the African penguin go extinct, livelihoods and human well-being will suffer. The extinction of the African Penguin would severely damage South Africa's reputation, both at home and on the global stage. As this species' legal and moral guardian, South Africa's inability to protect the penguins would mar its image as a leader in natural heritage and environmental conservation. African penguins, serving as indicator species, are sentinels of ocean health. This means the penguin population's state mirrors the overall condition of the ecosystem. Consequently, the presence, absence, or abundance of African penguins reflects the surrounding environmental conditions and any shifts in stability. Their extinction would trigger far-reaching consequences for the entire ecosystem. For many reasons, their loss is terrible to contemplate. #NotBy2035 We rely on donations (TAX ID 87-4716839)—US 501(c)(3) public nonprofit charity.

  • Katherine Lacefield (Macdonald) and Just BeCause Philanthropy Consulting were the perfect fit for our foundation. Thank you so much for the post about our adventures working together. You're the best and we're grateful to you!

Why is this non-profit succeeding while we're struggling? That’s what most small non-profits think when they see organizations like KruShan Foundation thriving. And I don’t blame them. ? A growing email list of engaged supporters ? A website that finally reflects their mission & builds trust ? A first-ever matching gift campaign that blew past expectations As #WorldWildlifeDay rolls in, Krushan is crushing it. If you’re feeling a little envious right now… good. Because this could be you. And the best part? You don’t need much to get there. Krushan didn’t start with deep pockets. They didn’t have a full-time team. They weren’t "set up for success" from day one. So, what did they have? ?? The willingness to invest in the right moves ?? The ability to focus their energy where it counts ?? A little outside help to cut through the noise and get results And that’s all it takes. I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the evolution of KruShan Foundation over these past months. Their drive? Their dedication? That’s what really made the difference. Yes, I worked alongside them. But they put in the work. They took action. And now, they (alongside the penguins they help) are reaping the rewards. ?? So if you’ve been hustling but not growing… If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to get your fundraising together— If you’re watching other non-profits succeed, thinking I wish that were us… ?? This is your sign to make it happen. ?? You always remember your first time. I've never been so happy to complete a tax form. We just filed our first 990-EZ for KruShan Foundation. We've graduated from filing the postcard 990 thanks to generous, caring donors. You'll find it, our financial reports, and our 2024 annual report on our website—https://lnkd.in/gR_BrApr. P.S. I once worked with some accountants dismissive of nonprofit orgs that "only file a postcard 990." Please remember that we all start somewhere, and starting a nonprofit is an act of hope.

  • Dr. Dion George, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, has requested public feedback on proposed regulations for the environmental management of offshore oil bunkering. These regulations aim to decrease the risks of bunkering to the marine environment, especially the endangered African Penguin species. Read more on our blog.

Several years ago, we saw Waddlesworth, or Wads as we call him, at Stoney Point African penguin colony in Betty's Bay, South Africa.?He is why we do what we do. He doesn't let that go to his head, but see that slight side-eye he's giving us? He can be snarky, which we like. He will opine on our social media channels from time to time, so look for his upcoming posts. #NotBy2035 #Africanpenguins #endangeredspecies #NOOW #birds #marineconservation

We’re excited to announce that the African Penguin Protectors KruShan Foundation X-Ray Room, a project we funded in late 2024, is operational. We’ll let our partner, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary, tell the story. The KruShan Foundation has recently made a groundbreaking donation to support the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary’s medical capabilities. Recognizing the urgent need for better diagnostic tools, they generously funded the purchase of a portable X-ray machine and related equipment. The new facility at the APSS, will be the first of its kind in the Overstrand region, offering critical care for all animals in need of emergency diagnostics, especially seabirds and penguins. Previously, any seabird or penguin requiring an X-ray had to be transported to a facility in Hermanus, a 40-minute journey that often exacerbated the animals’ stress, sometimes leading to their deterioration or death. With this new equipment, the APSS will be able to provide immediate, on-site diagnoses, reducing the risk to these vulnerable creatures and improving survival rates. The X-ray room has been proudly named?the African Penguin Protectors KruShan Foundation X-Ray Room?in recognition of the foundation’s incredible contribution to fully equip the facility. “The KruShan Foundation’s support continues to transform our ability to protect and care for the animals at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary,” said Christine Wessels, spokesperson for Marine Dynamics. “Whether through the Seabird Ranger initiative on Dyer Island or the life-saving X-ray facility, their contributions make a tangible difference in the fight to prevent the extinction of the African Penguin and preserve marine life.” Wilfred Chivell, CEO of Marine Dynamics and Founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, added, “The KruShan Foundation is assisting us to act now, and actively making every cent donated count, benefiting the penguins—not the people who are using the critically endangered status of the African Penguin to earn bigger salaries by pledging for more money to research penguins to extinction!” The KruShan Foundation’s dedication to conservation is a model for others to follow. Thanks to their generosity, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary can now offer enhanced medical care and protection for endangered seabirds in the region. • Thanks to Dan Callister for drawing attention to the plight of the critically endangered African penguins with heartbreakingly authentic images. These iconic birds are starving and we and our partners are closely watching the news around next month's landmark court case in South Africa. This is the first legal action ever taken to hold the State to its constitutional obligation to protect threatened species and prevent their extinction. Yes, protection of endangered species and prevention of their extinction is written into South Africa's constitution. The applicant's case turns on the irrationality and unlawfulness of the Minister's decision to put in place island closures which are not biologically meaningful. They are asking the court to put in place scientifically informed fishing closures which strike an optimal trade-off between maximizing protection of African Penguins' foraging areas and minimizing impact to Industry.

Threats the African penguin faces In 2025: One of the most pressing issues is the decline in food availability, primarily driven by competition with commercial purse-seine fishing and the impacts of climate change on prey distribution. The intense fishing pressure in the waters surrounding their breeding colonies has led to a stark depletion of sardine and anchovies, which are essential for the penguins diet. Warming sea temperatures and changing ocean currents are altering the availability of their preferred prey, forcing young penguins to search for food in increasingly unproductive areas. As a result, juvenile survival rates have plummeted, with reports of adult penguins abandoning their nests in a desperate search for food.?While diseases like avian flu have also contributed to their declining numbers, studies highlight that the combined effects of commercial?fishing and climate change remain the most critical threats to the African Penguin population. Other threats include pollution, stressful interactions with people, car strikes and attacks by domestic pets. ?
