Last week, Ryan Ornberg and Gabriel Wilcox shared their expertise on sustainability and resilience at the Chicago Build Expo. Ryan, Associate Principal at Krueck Sexton Partners, moderated the panel "Sustainable Architecture: Strategies for Reducing Environmental Impact," where he discussed practical solutions to minimize our ecological footprint in building design. Gabriel Wilcox, Director of Sustainable Design, took the stage for "The Key Principles of Sustainable Design," expanding core principles for creating resilient, green building strategies. It was great to reconnect with familiar faces and meet new ones at the Chicago Architecture Center’s Open House Chicago at Mindworks: The Science of Thinking! If you missed it, Mindworks is free and open to the public. This hands-on space allows you to explore a range of key concepts in behavioral science through eight interactive exhibits. Conceived by faculty at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Mindworks was designed by Krueck Sexton Partners with exhibit design by Pentagram. Kudos to the Chicago Architecture Center, City of Chicago, and The Chicago Community Trust of the Missing Middle Infill Housing Competition for driving bold, innovative solutions to confront Chicago’s housing challenges. What sets this competition apart is its focus on implementation—matching pre-approved architects and developers and committing City resources. This creates a powerful framework for realizing middle-density housing opportunities in Chicago. Krueck Sexton Partners' proposal, while not selected, envisioned a modular rowhouse system that responds to Chicago’s diverse family living arrangements. Our design focused on land-use elasticity, adaptable living spaces, and opportunities for residents to leverage their homes as economic assets. We created an urban kit-of-parts that celebrate Chicago’s vibrant population, with shared green spaces and existing structures to preserve neighborhood character.
