The Silvio J. Mollo Federal Building renovation is featured in Architectural Record's article, "Continuing Education: Net-Zero Retrofits," by Katharine Logan. The piece highlights the building's transformation into a leading example of achieving carbon-free benchmarks on constrained budgets. Gabriel Wilcox, Director of Sustainable Design at KSP, emphasizes the project's broader implications, stating that it is intended to "serve as a model for decarbonizing the entire GSA portfolio." • Juan Villafane (GSD '00) and KSP hosted a happy hour for Harvard University Graduate School of Design's Urban Design and Real Estate students during their visit to Chicago for their studio project. The studio, HOPE, CHANGE & EQUITY: The Obama Presidential Center and Redevelopment of the Woodlawn Neighborhood, is led by Maurice Cox, former Chicago Planning Commissioner. We were excited to host the cohort and see so many local alumni come together for a lively and engaging conversation on the future of urban design in Chicago.

  • Shortlisted! KinderForest Recognized in Buildner Kinderspace Competition We are proud to share that KinderForest has been shortlisted in the Kinderspace Competition, an international call to rethink the architecture of early childhood learning spaces. This recognition demonstrates the team’s commitment to designing spaces that spark curiosity, play, and connection to nature. KinderForest reimagines the preschool environment as a pedagogical forest, where clusters of classroom “nests” are interwoven with meandering pathways. The project is a critical speculation of an empty land parcel next to the historic Julia C. Lathrop Homes in Chicago, IL. Inspired by the site’s ecological history as a once-thriving forest along the river, it imagines a nature-based learning space that extends the housing complex into a vibrant civic hub, connecting residents with the river edge and fostering a sense of community. “KinderForest aims to build on Herman Hertzberger’s idea of a ‘spatial instrument’.?By drawing from the spatial attributes of a forest, the project creates a pedagogical instrument that fosters a wide variety of learning opportunities for our youngest minds.” — Project Team This recognition celebrates the work of Sarah Weiss and Mubasheer M, who have shaped KinderForest from initial ideas to concept design and aspire to create dialogue about the future of learning environments in cities. • The lighting design at CME Group's headquarters is an example of how thoughtful details can transform a space!

The design of CME Group’s Chicago headquarters conveys the innovation and collaborative spirit at the heart of the company’s culture. The lighting design energizes the space immediately upon entry and leads employees to a central hub that showcases the client as a leader in their field while preserving the company’s legacy and history. The visual balance of contemporary and historic elements contributes to the entry’s strong first impression with illuminated frieze panels and edge-lit glass at the escalators. Perforated panel-walls line the corridors leading to the training rooms, fitted with DMX color-changing LEDs and programmed to subtly convey the highly technical work of the firm. This feature embraces the CME Group’s culture of innovation, learning, and teamwork while sharing a little bit about who they are. Achitect: HED, Krueck Sexton Partners ??: Kendall McCaugherty ?
