  • Cultural expressions, in general, are really tough to translate and “brinka karnaval” (play carnival) is right up there. It is best understood or explained only if you have experienced all that encompasses the carnival spirit. People of all ages, throughout Cabo Verde and in the Diaspora, have been playing carnival for days leading up to today, which is carnival day, by participating in parades, going to parties, and attending other carnival events. And those who can hang will continue on this streak for days after! ???????? ???? ?? How would you translate or explain the expression “brinka karnaval”? Share with us in the comments below. Congressman Hakeem Sekou is the highest ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, the first African-American to lead a major party in the United States Congress, and he has Cabo Verdean roots! Yes, you read that correctly. Like many before him, Congressman Jeffries’ maternal great-grandfather, Manuel Gomes, arrived in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1915 from the island of Fogo. Congressman Jeffries visited Cabo Verde, in an official capacity, for the inauguration of Cabo Verde’s elected President Jose Maria Neves in November 2021, as part of a delegation led by the then Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. Congressman Jeffries was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Crown Heights, to be exact. He first took office in January 2013 as the U.S. House of Representatives to represent New York’s 8th congressional district. Fast forward almost ten years later, Congressman Jeffries was elected as the House Democratic Leader in November 2022, making him the first African-American to hold this position for any major party. He was reelected as the House Democratic Leader in November 2024. #kriolish #thoughtfultuesdays #blackhistorymonth #caboverdeanamerican #cvroots #kriolu?

On January 20, Cabo Verde celebrates National Heroes Day, not only to hold memory of Amilcar Cabral’s assassination on January 20, 1973, but to also hold memory of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the independence of Cabo Verde and Guinea-Bissau. On this day, we honor freedom fighter Maria da Luz Boal [Lilica Boal]. She was born in Tarrafal on Santiago island in 1934. Her path would take her from Tarrafal to S?o Vicente island to attend high school, and eventually to Portugal to further her studies. Ironically, Portugal’s higher education institutions would become center-stage where many future African freedom fighters would converge - changing the lives of generations to come. In 1961, approximately 60 African university students took part in a clandestine escape from Portugal, later called “flight to fight”, and Boal was among a handful of young women who joined the group. Not for the faint of heart, the escape took the group through northern Portugal, to Spain, and finally to France where from there they traveled to different countries to join the liberation movement. Their lives would never be the same as many from this group would later become Presidents, Prime-Ministers, and other government officials in post-independent Africa. Years later in Cabo Verde, Boal would become Cabo Verde’s 1st congresswoman, founding member of Cabo Verde Women Organization (OMCV - Organiza??o das Mulheres de Cabo Verde), and achieved many more accomplishments. Lilica Boal passed away at the age of 90 on November 6, 2024, in Praia on Santiago island. On this day, to all the freedom fighters - we thank you! #caboverde #freedomfighters #lilicaboal #nationalheroes?
