Traditional product management is a trap pre-PMF. Here’s what to do instead. If you’re an early-stage startup, traditional product management?does not work. It slows you down when what you really need is speed and momentum. I’ve learned this firsthand while building Kraftful: When we launched our first MVP, it was?barebones—two engineers, 3 months of work, and a product that could barely analyze a week’s worth of app reviews or tickets. But it was enough to test the waters, and we got flooded with demand. In that moment, speed and adaptability mattered far more than a perfectly crafted product roadmap or epic-level user stories. We had to move fast, listen to our users, and rearchitect everything on the fly. Here’s the thing: most product managers are trained for post-PMF environments. You learn your craft in established companies or by reading books written by leaders operating in post-PMF worlds. And the advice from those environments? It’s great—for later.?But in the early stages, it’ll sink you. Here's what I've learned from my journey: ? DON’T do this pre-PMF: - Over-research.?Just ship it. You'll learn faster from what’s out in the wild than from endless interviews. - Build a long-term roadmap.?Anything beyond a few months is fantasy. Everything will change too fast. - Tiptoe around opinions.?Early stage is no time for politicking. Bias to action is everything. ? DO this instead - Talk to customers. Every. Single. Day.?And make sure your team knows what you’re learning. - Iterate. Fast. Then do it again. And again. - Do things that don't scale. Do work for your customers. Dive into their problem. - Stay scrappy.?Learn to use Figma, write code, QA the product yourself, write copy—whatever it takes to speed up delivery. - Empower everyone on the team to feel ownership. Reward fast decision making even if it wasn't the right decision. Next time it will be better. Building an early-stage startup is chaotic, fun, and one of the most rewarding things you can do. At Kraftful, we ship weekly, work transparently, and prioritize momentum above all else. That scrappiness helped us land over 50,000 product teams in 20 months. The rules you follow post-PMF will?hurt?you pre-PMF. Learn when to break them. #productmanagement #startuplife #productmarketfit
