Relative to the United States (S&P 500), European stocks (STOXX 600) have vastly underperformed since the GFC in 2008. It’s not as though the STOXX 600 performance has been abysmal. In the last 20 years, it has returned 219% which equates to a 6.0% CAGR. However, when compared to the S&P 500’s 634% return and 10.5% CAGR the gulf in performance is clear. Moreover, if you convert the STOXX 600 returns into USD, the performance over the period drops to 161% with a measly 4.9% CAGR. This has been a multi-decade trend.
