I underestimated where we’re at with AI. Walking into HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition last week, I expected to see the same skepticism from clinicians and patients. The same debates about trust. The same hesitation about letting AI play a bigger role in healthcare. But that’s not what I saw. Looking at products like PolyAI, NextGen Healthcare and Sunoh.ai, it’s clear that end users have drunk the AI Kool-Aid. Something has changed in 2025. There's still a ton of hype. And the pathway to an ROI on AI is still fuzzy. But we're hit a turning point for UX design. In the past, so much of our work was about building trust. Designing confidence indicators. Giving users control. Making AI explain itself. Those things still matter, but they are no longer the entire conversation. It reminds me of the early days of online shopping. At first, the novelty was the whole story. People marveled at the idea of clicking a button and having something arrive at their doorstep. But once the magic wore off, the real work began. And we could stop selling the idea of online shopping and focus on removing friction and building loyalty. AI in healthcare is hitting that moment. This changes the job of a healthcare UX designer. We are no longer introducing AI. We are shaping how it fits into clinical thinking. How it helps clinicians make faster, better decisions without adding complexity. How it works across fragmented systems. How it earns trust through usability, not explanation. That is not to say we can stop thinking about control and transparency. Those will always matter. But the question has changed. Instead of “Will clinicians trust AI?” we can get back to “How do we make the best product imaginable?” Did you feel this shift?
