The Korean Legal Clinic held its Housing Law & Immigration Law Pop-Up Clinic this past weekend! We would like to thank the volunteer legal professionals, Alexander Chang and Joo Eun Kim, who provided their insight and guidance to make the session a success. Alex is a licensed paralegal and immigration consultant registered with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants. He has acted for his clients in personal injury, focusing on accident benefits claims, and also represents clients for civil litigation matters advanced at the Small Claims Court. Alex is also a licensed mortgage agent and offers Landlord Tenant Board services. Joo Eun is a refugee lawyer currently practicing at the Refugee Law Office of Legal Aid Ontario. Joo Eun’s practice focuses on litigation and appeals of refugee claims, removal order appeals, and various immigration applications for persons without status in Canada. As a lawyer, he regularly appears at all divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board as well as the Federal Court. He also acted as co-counsel for Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers at the Supreme Court of Canada. He is regularly invited to speak at conferences and community events as an expert in refugee matters. We also thank all our volunteers who supported this initiative. We have hosted legal education sessions, created online resources, and provided summary legal advice through projects with legal professionals.? Our volunteers have been working hard on the following projects planned for 2025: Inbox Referral Program: Our network of referral legal professionals provide free 30-minute consultations to low-income members of the Korean community. These volunteers have expertise in various practice areas including family law, immigration and refugee law, civil/commercial litigation, employment law, criminal law, wills & estate law, personal injury law, corporate law, and real estate law. Inquiries can be sent to [email protected] Legal Resources: We will publish a Legal Toolkit and an Anti-Asian Racism Booklet in Korean. These resources are designed to help community members better understand legal terminology Public Legal Education (PLE) Sessions: Lawyers and other professionals will deliver presentations on a variety of legal topics. It has been another amazing year of serving the Korean community. As we approach the end of 2024, we would like to share a recap of this past year’s accomplishments, made possible by our dedicated volunteers: Pop-Up Legal Clinics: We held five in-person pop-up clinics where community members received free consultations from Korean lawyers. Our volunteer lawyers provided summary advice on workplace law, immigration law, criminal law, wills & estates, and family law.? Legal Resources: Our Legal Toolkit and Anti-Asian Racism Booklet have been completed and will be published soon.? Referral Network Expansion: We added 14 lawyers to our referral network, which connects individuals with legal professionals offering free 30-minute consultations for eligible inquiries. As a reminder, recordings of all our virtual public legal education (PLE) sessions are available on our YouTube channel. Every year, volunteers update the video descriptions with the latest legal information. We’re excited about the initiatives we have planned for 2025.
