The Cumberland River Bridge is a vital component of the infrastructure and economic development of Clarksville, Tennessee, and beyond. Since its construction in 1891, natural damage and wear occurred over time, resulting in challenges and inefficiencies. The Koppers Railroad Structures team was called upon by R. J. Corman Railroad Group, LLC to support with a bridge Rehabilitation and Automation Project. Implementing new technology within the existing structure allowed the team to maintain the historical features of the bridge while making several safety and functionality improvements. Updates included an automated swing span turning mechanism with an electric drive motor, limit switches and control panels for precise monitoring and control, an upgraded rail lift system and new bridge ties. Congrats to all involved for creating safer, stronger, more sustainable infrastructure solutions for this region.
