Commencement speaker, David Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Chairman of The Carlyle Group, spoke powerfully on using business as a force for meaningful change in the world - a core value of Kogod. As the new owner of the Baltimore Orioles, he related the 9-person, 9-inning game structure to 9 principles of achieving a happy life. He encouraged students to lead by example, give back, live with humility and integrity, and shared the power of thanking others, along with being proud of your alma mater. His story of rejections, pivot, and finally triumph spoke?to the shared challenges faced by international students and the importance of persistence, and network of support. In the second hour, he provided valuable insights into?getting?hired in?#tech?as he has managed his careers at?Cisco,?Google,?and?Walmart. Seeing his resume as an example and learning that #SQL is a must-know tool was helpful. Piyush Jain?has?demonstrated his commitment to analytics, machine learning, and?#AI?by continuing to earn multiple certifications. Thank you to?Choice Hotels International?for hosting the?American University - Kogod School of Business?MS Analytics and MBA students for a site visit last week at their new HQ in?North?Bethesda. During the visit, students learned from the talent acquisition team about the history of?Choice Hotels International?- growing from a small chain of roadside hotels to one of the largest hotel chains in the world. They discussed?the structure of the organization and opportunities that exist within?an?efficient and streamlined?organization and shared?the full scope of services and impact they have in the hospitality industry. Students also heard from the Choice Hotels?Advanced Analytics?team about their impressive research using comprehensive analytics to make strategy decisions to further the Choice Hotels brand, advertise services, measure guest satisfaction, and more.
