The Knoxville Area Urban League, a civil rights, economic development and social service organization, came into existence in 1968 at the height of the civil rights movement to promote equal employment opportunities for African-Americans in Knoxville, Tennessee. Today, the organization is a non-profit, non-partisan, interracial community-based organization, serving a diverse client base in Knox, Blount and Anderson counties. The Knoxville Area Urban League is an affiliate of the National Urban League, the country’s oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Today, the National Urban League spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its local affiliates. The National Urban League has more than 100 affiliates located in 35 states and the District of Columbia, providing direct services to more than 2 million people nationwide through programs, advocacy and research.

Today’s Knoxville Area Urban League Shoes for School event was truly inspiring. This event holds profound significance for the families in our community, touching their lives in ways beyond what we can imagine. The KAUL team organized a remarkable event that provided vital support to children and families. To my incredible Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee team, you ladies are phenomenal. It was a joy to share a table with you at this event and witness firsthand the positive impact. To the wonderful volunteers I had the pleasure of meeting yesterday, you are all incredible. It was an honor to volunteer alongside each of you.

American Heart Association’s Greater Knoxville team enjoyed a Learn and Serve Day together. We started the morning with #Heartsaver #CPR #AED certification training provided by Cheryl Smith with CPR Choice, followed by lunch and a fun day supporting Knoxville Area Urban League. We will all come together this Saturday 9am-12pm for KAUL’s Shoes for School event inside the Jacob’s Building where AHA and CPR Choice will provide Hands-Only CPR skills demos and heart health education. Cheers to a heart-healthy start to this new school year! ??

After months of preparation, the day is finally here! The Knoxville Area Urban League’s Shoes For School happens this morning. 1700+ pairs of shoes will be distributed this year, including school supplies, and other services. I love how this event brings so many people together to empower our community. A special thank you to our sponsors Tennessee Valley Authority, WBIR-TV, Shoe Carnival, Inc., and to all of the volunteers who helped to make this a reality. More to come!
