In August of 2019, Ed Adame, one of KPC’s awesome engineers, traveled to La Reforma, Guatemala to work with the village to construct a water system. The system consisted of a 2-inch water main and a water tank, and it was designed by a local engineering firm, ADICAY, with assistance from Lipscomb University and Knox ProCorps. The La Reforma community came together to construct this system. They dug the trenches for the water main and carried large rocks needed for the water tank foundation. Ed assisted in construction (see photos) and stated that his favorite part was “seeing how a community can come together for the betterment of the people living there” by addressing their shared need for clean water. A water commission was established in the community to allow the villagers to contribute in whatever way they could and to ensure the long-term maintenance of the water system. Prior to this project, villagers had to travel 10-15 minutes to access a water source. The new water system provides more convenience and free time for the villagers, and it is still operational today. Ed is an engineer at Loudon Utilities in Tennessee, and has since traveled to other villages in Guatemala on other projects. #KnoxProCorps #cleanwater #KPCthursday

KPC was born out of a dinner to raise interest and support for the work that Kevin Colvett and Kris Hatchell were doing in partnership with Lipscomb University & a non-profit in Guatemala named Cafnima. Kevin & Kris had been recruiting Nashville area engineering firms to support water projects, so we organized a dinner in Knoxville to introduce the idea here. We hoped to have 20 people show up and over 70 came. The dinner sparked conversations, more meetings, and an overwhelming sense of the Knoxville Engineering community wanting to use their gifts and talents (technical knowledge in this case) to help people all over the globe. KPC was incorporated as a non-profit in 2012. #KnoxProCorps #KPChistory
