The Knowlton School is saddened to learn of the passing of Curtis J. Moody, FAIA, NOMA, NCARB, LEED AP (BSArch ’73). Moody was an alumnus of the architecture program at Ohio State, founder of Moody Nolan, the largest African-American-owned and managed architectural firm in the U.S., and a long-time and steadfast supporter of the Knowlton School and Ohio State. OSU Collective Residence: Visiting Scholar Housing Quanyi Wang / Architecture UG3 Spring 2024 Instructor: Stephen Turk --- This visiting scholar housing, located near the Ohio State campus, is designed to immerse scholars in campus life and facilitate their integration into the surrounding community. The project features three distinct “circles” in its design. — The first is the open gathering area that serves as the connection between the community and scholars and encompasses the nearby residence. — The second circle is reflected in the spiral staircase and cylindrical bookshelf. As an important component, it governs the distribution and use of space inside the building. — Lastly, individual units incorporate elements of a quarter-circle and square, forming the third circle. WEDNESDAY! The Baumer Lecture Series will continue this Wednesday, October 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Gui Auditorium with Emmanuel Thingue, a landscape architect with @new city parks. Thingue’s lecture will focus on the viability of the public sector as a career path for landscape architects and the positive impacts public service has on shaping cities and improving the quality of life. His lecture will also emphasize design methodologies unique to the public sector and dissect our approach to successful projects. Emmanuel Thingue currently works for New City Parks, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create parks in underserved communities. Before joining New City Parks, Thingue designed high-quality public spaces with the NYC Parks Department for over 30 years. Sammy Kocher 2024-2025 Knowlton Ambassador Meet Sammy! Sammy is from North Canton, Ohio, and is majoring in Architecture. She is part of the executive board of Alpha Rho Chi and signs the National Anthem and Carmen Ohio at football and basketball games! She answered a few questions for us about her time as a Knowlton student. --- What do you enjoy most about being a Knowlton student? I love the community created in the studio environment. You always have someone to turn to throughout all of the ups and downs. What is your best advice for a new Knowlton student? Create a schedule and stick to it. "I think we were probably already starting construction documents by the time we're still solidifying the skin [cladding]. So as I think back to my projects today, I don't know that there are many clients that would have allowed for that level of uncertainty. I suspect they would have said, 'tell me now what this building is going to be and I want to see it now.' I think that space to really explore, it's something that was extremely valued and helpful." THIS WEDNESDAY! All Knowlton students are invited to attend a guest lecture by Professor Henry Yeung of the National University of Singapore's Department of Geography on Wednesday, October 9th at 11:00 a.m. in Knowlton Hall 177. --- “Chips war? Global production networks and geopolitics in the post-pandemic US and East Asia” This presentation offers some key empirical observations on the highly contested and politicized nature of semiconductor global production networks since the US-China trade war and the Covid-19 pandemic. In this capital-intensive manufacturing industry, governance and power dynamics are manifested differently from many other industries due to highly complex technology regimes, production network ecosystems, and, more recently, geopolitical imperatives.
