High-energy pulses power some of the most advanced technologies, from high-power radar to medical imaging. But generating a pulse with consistent power isn’t as simple as discharging a capacitor. Pulse Forming Networks (PFNs) are critical for shaping and controlling high-energy pulses. Unlike direct capacitive discharge, which results in a decaying pulse, PFNs create a well-defined, steady output. Choosing the right capacitor is key to PFN performance. Factors like voltage rating, ESR and energy density all impact efficiency. Want to learn more about PFN design and capacitor selection? Why do capacitors and inductors behave like opposites in RF circuits? Capacitors store energy in an electric field and help regulate voltage changes, while inductors store energy in a magnetic field and resist changes in current. As frequency increases, capacitors allow more current to pass, behaving like short circuits, whereas inductors increasingly resist current flow, acting more like open circuits. This fundamental interaction is key to RF circuit design, especially in LC tank circuits and impedance matching networks. LC circuits form the backbone of RF signal filtering and tuning, ensuring efficient power transfer across components. In this week’s Knowles blog, we cover how these components work together to shape RF performance. https://bit.ly/42fnRSG
