Research Highlight: This study investigated the effects of resveratrol-copper (R-Cu) supplementation in reducing chemotherapy toxicity in patients with advanced gastric cancer undergoing docetaxel-based chemotherapy. Although R-Cu did not significantly reduce overall grade ≥ 3 toxicity or haematological toxicity, it markedly decreased the incidence of certain non-haematological side effects, like hand-foot syndrome and diarrhea, without compromising progression-free or overall survival. This suggests potential benefits of R-Cu in managing specific chemotherapy-related toxicities. KNOW is a tool that allows access to up-to-date research on natural agents in cancer care.
关于我们
KNOWoncology.org is a non-profit educational platform that allows people access to up-to-date research on natural agents and nutrition in cancer care. KNOW systematically searches and summarizes human studies from both Medline and EMBASE (worldwide data). Then KNOW makes the research searchable by tumor type, natural therapy, conventional treatment, and side effects. Cancer care providers, researchers, and advocacy groups can use KNOW to efficiently find current best evidence for education, safety and clinical decision-making. You can copy references into medical communications, academic projects, education materials, curriculum, and websites. KNOW summaries also offer detailed descriptions of interventions, statistical results, and quality risk assessment, which are features commonly missing in study abstracts. KNOWoncology.org is dedicated to improving the lives of people with cancer through integrative cancer care.

Research Highlight: This meta-analysis of 28 RCTs involving 1861 patients found that curcumin and honey were the most effective treatments for preventing oral mucositis in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Chlorhexidine and benzydamine were also effective, outperforming placebo. The results suggest that curcumin and honey could be promising options for clinical prevention of oral mucositis, though further large-scale studies are needed. Research Highlight: In a systematic review, nine randomized controlled trials (RCT’s) were found on vitamin D3 for treatment-induced pain in people with cancer. Six RCT’s reported significant pain reductions and three RCT’s did not. Median duration was 24 weeks (range 12- 52 weeks) and dose of vitamin D varied between 2000 IU daily to 50,000 IU weekly. Five studies were on breast cancer survivors with aromatase-inhibitor induced musculoskeletal syndrome, one study on women with bone pain from metastatic breast cancer, two studies on prostate cancer, and one in palliative cancer. Vitamin D supplementation may improve treatment-induced pain in people with cancer, especially in individuals with low levels of vitamin D. The RCTs demonstrated an overall low-to-unclear risk of bias. Research Highlight: In a double blind RCT, the 15 out of 30 women who took ginseng (1?g/day) alongside anthracycline based chemotherapy for breast cancer had better heart function (left ventricular ejection fraction after the eighth chemotherapy cycle had improved from baseline whereas the placebo group had decreased ejection fraction). 6 patients in the placebo group developed cancer-related cardiac dysfunction whereas none of the patients in the ginseng group did. Research Highlight: Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRIs) often cause acne-like rashes that impact quality of life for cancer patients. A study found that honeysuckle, used traditionally for skin issues, helped reduce the severity and speed up recovery from these rashes. Patients who received honeysuckle as a preventive treatment experienced milder symptoms and faster recovery than those with conventional care. Research Highlight: In a systematic review of 16 studies, including 1389 patients with liver cancer, supplementing branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) around liver surgery was associated with fewer post-operative infections, less ascites, greater weight gain, and a shorter hospital stay. BCAA supplementation did not affect cancer recurrence or survival. Research Highlight: In people with relapsed and refractory malignant lymphoma undergoing an autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT), treatment with synbiotics twice per day starting upon the initiation of MCVC chemotherapy until 28 days post-auto-HSCT, there were no significant differences in the total parenteral nutrition (TPN) duration, engraftment time, duration of hospitalization, rates of treatment-induced adverse effects, nutritional status, quality of life (QOL), cost of drugs, and levels of glucagon- like peptide-2 (GLP-2), peptide (P)YY, and leptin levels compared to placebo. There were no synbiotics-related adverse events observed in this study. Research Highlight: The authors performed a meta-analysis of 13 cohort studies which examined the relationship between inflammatory potential of the diet (before and/or after cancer diagnosis) and cancer recurrence and survival (various cancer types). Overall, diets with high inflammatory potential were not associated with an increased risk of recurrence, cancer-specific mortality, or all-cause mortality; however, an analysis of the data on post-diagnosis diets (from 6 studies) suggested a 34% increased risk of all-cause mortality. Research Highlight: In a systematic review of HMB in people with cancer, fifteen studies were included suggesting overall that HMB supplementation has a beneficial effect on muscle mass and function. Ca-HMB doses of 3.0 g/day were used in 80.0% of the studies. Four studies had high risk of bias across all outcome domains. Six were randomized controlled trials in patients with various cancer types and treatments. Considering higher-quality studies, evidence of a beneficial effect of HMB supplementation was found in four of four studies for muscle mass, two of two for muscle function, three of three for hospitalization, and five of seven for survival. In contrast, no beneficial effects of HMB on quality of life or body weight was found in two of four and three of five studies, respectively. No serious adverse effects directly related to the nutrition intervention were reported. Overall quality of trials varied greatly. Research Highlight: In a systematic review of 12 RCT’s involving 667 people undergoing treated with radioiodine for differentiated thyroid cancer, both parotid gland massage and inhaled aromatherapy with blended 1.0 mL of lemon and 0.5 mL of ginger essential oils helped salivary gland dysfunction. Antioxidants such as vitamin E (100, 200, 300 and 800IU daily for 5 weeks) and selenium (300mcg for 10 days) showed radioprotective effects on the salivary gland. Vitamin C 100mg 3x daily failed to show benefit. Amifostine had inconsistent outcomes among studies. The quality of the trials was mixed.
