“This is a chair by two people who had a three-year chess game,” says Bruce Hannah. “One of us would do something and the other would respond, until we got to the essence of what people need.” Working from their Manhattan studio, Bruce Hannah and Andrew Morrison were driven by the desire to create concise, inviting products with as few materials as possible. After making something with four parts, they’d start again to see if they could make it with three. “Designing this chair was like editing poetry,” says Hannah. Private Entry: The owners of this inviting residence by architect Maynard Pearlstine love how the interior frames their “room full of tulips.” Designed by Eero Saarinen, the Tulip Chairs and Pedestal Table are enjoyed daily in a space that still has the original board and batten paneling and louvered doors that open to reveal a kitchen pass through. Thoughtful details throughout the home caught the attention of the South Carolina Chapter of the AIA, which awarded Pearlstine an Excellence in Architecture Award for this residence in 1957.
