Field trip: After browsing 800 years of Dutch history at the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, art enthusiasts relax over gourmet fare Rijks Restaurant, located in the museum’s Philips Wing. Fully renovated in 2023, the restaurant welcomes guests with a warm, neutral palette and comfortable chairs by Eero Saarinen. These chairs—known as Saarinen Executive Chairs—introduced sophistication and sculptural form to boardrooms in 1950. Today, they are just as likely to be found in dining rooms as they are in corner offices. Click here to explore the Saarinen Collection:

Private Entry: Located in the mountains surrounding Rio de Janeiro, Casa das Canoas was the third home Oscar Niemeyer designed for his own family. Completed in 1953, the structure shows how modern materials, specifically reinforced concrete, allowed Niemeyer to freely shape the home to fit the irregularities of the natural environment. Rather than removing a massive rock on the building site, Niemeyer incorporated it into the design. An oversized sinuous slab roof—the shape of which is echoed in the Saarinen table and chairs—creates several covered outdoor areas in which to enjoy in this tropical hideaway. The ideals formed at the Bauhaus are still felt throughout society, and the furniture created at that time continues to shape the contemporary landscape. Many at the school, including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, believed in the German concept of ‘gesamtkunswerk,’ where multiple art forms are used holistically to create a cohesive whole. Mies continued to explore this idea at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he became a trusted mentor to architecture student Florence Knoll. Years later, Mies granted Knoll the production rights to the Barcelona Collection. Now a signature of the Knoll brand, every Barcelona piece is built to Mies’ exacting standards. Florence and Hans Knoll knew they weren’t just making furniture, they were creating works of art. That’s why Ludwig Mies van der Rohe granted Knoll the production rights to his Barcelona Collection. He knew the company—known for its manufacturing expertise and uncompromising attention to detail—made furniture that met his very strict standards. Even today, the seat of the Barcelona Chair is made from 40 individual panels that are cut, welted, and tufted by hand.
