Jonathan Dorogin, PhD, is our most recent graduate from the Bioengineering PhD Program.?As a graduate student in?Marian Hettiaratchi, Ph.D.'s lab,?Dorogin focused on engineering shelf-stable hydrogels—soft gel-like structures—functionalized with affibodies, small proteins with therapeutic potential. By optimizing hydrogels for?affibody release,?his work aims to enable targeted delivery at injury sites, enhancing bone regeneration and immune response.
Looking ahead, Dorogin hopes to expand his impact by leading a research group in industry, continuing to translate scientific discoveries into real-world solutions. Dorogin’s PhD work evolved into a startup concept, earning recognition through the Cameron Innovation Fellowship and securing 2nd place in the Biomedical Engineering Society Medtronic Student Design Competition. Dorogin plans to first gain more industry experience in protein engineering—focusing on R&D and process development—to better understand large-scale biologics production before pursuing it as a venture. He is also passionate about integrating outreach, including mentoring community engineering clubs, and supporting students interested in sustainable and ethical bioengineering, throughout the rest of his career.?
Congratulations, Dr. Dorogin!
