I've posted about the groundbreaking innovation and societal impact of the work by Julia Winter and the team at Alchemie in developing #KASI many times, but today is an especially appropriate time for another shout out. This project was first funded by #EDIESSBIR in 2020 as a novel concept and has since won follow on awards from #SBIRgov #AmericasSeedFund National Science Foundation (NSF), NIDDLRR, and NIH. Back in 2019 Julia and I discussed the challenge for securing funding (private or philanthropy) for a #accessibility project that would serve a lower incidence population - students who are blind or visually impaired. Our SBIR program answered this call, awarding the high-risk high-reward project because of its social significance and the urgency to invest in innovation to ensure that ALL students can access tools to practice #STEM. 5 years later this project has a licensing agreement with Wiley to distribute at scale, and Julia is presenting results from research at key industry events. I will forever be proud to have had the opportunity to lead a program that invested in this R&D and do work that contributed to this story. https://lnkd.in/eViUESMP Institute of Education Sciences U.S. Department of Education Erin Higgins David Miller Lindsay Portnoy, PhD Ben Schrag Rajesh Mehta Tony Beck Brian Bard Sarah Brasiel Tara Courchaine Fox Anita Vermeer Tina Diamond Regina "Gina" Kline Erin Mote Erin Stark Christopher Patnoe Kevin Custer Mark Barlet #AssistiveTechnology #Accessibility #EdTech
Accessibility should go beyond WCAG - we should strive to create interactive learning tools that are usable and useful for all learners, working together. Next week I will present our team's "born accessible" interactive learning tools for chemistry at the 40th Annual CSUN Assistive Technology Conference in Anaheim. (11:20amPT on Friday, 3/14) This is my first #CSUNATC - and I am excited to meet in-person so many who have inspired and supported us in this journey. See you soon!
