This week, we are featuring another community-voted project's support, showcasing how decentralized climate finance drives real-world impact. Klima Foundation has purchased $227,000 worth of forward carbon credits from the Kwamisa Community Forest Project in Ghana! This project spans 3,010 hectares of reforested land within the Forest Reserve in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, Offinso Forest District. Through large-scale reforestation efforts, the project is restoring degraded forest reserves by planting teak trees, revitalizing ecosystems, and enhancing biodiversity. Beyond environmental restoration, it creates jobs, strengthens food security, and fosters sustainable land use practices. Why does this matter? ?? Carbon Sequestration – Removes 14,000+ tonnes of CO2 annually. ?? Biodiversity Restoration – Revitalizes ecosystems and habitats. ?? Economic Impact – Creates jobs, strengthens food security, and improves livelihoods for 3,200+ community members. Ghana has one of the highest deforestation rates in Africa, losing up to 2% of its high forest zone (HFZ) annually. Over the past century, over 85% of the country’s forest cover has disappeared. Through strategic funding and collaboration with Aither & PADO, Klima Foundation is helping reverse deforestation, ensuring sustainable land use and climate resilience. ?? In 2023, with a 95% approval vote, Klima Foundation has allocated $250,000 to fund the Improved Cookstoves for Rohingya Refugees project in Bangladesh. The initial funding secures forward delivery of 31,250 carbon credits. This initiative replaces inefficient wood-fuel stoves with high-efficiency biomass cookstoves, cutting fuel consumption by over 50% and significantly reducing carbon emissions. ?? Why this matters: ?? Cuts reliance on non-renewable biomass, ?? Decreases the risk of open-air fires, reduces indoor air pollution,and improves health outcomes, ?? Significant scale: approximately 100,000 cookstoves were distributed throughout 2022 and 2023, ???????? Carbon finance has traditionally focused on large-scale, industrial solutions, but projects like Improved Cookstoves for Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh signal a shift to impactful community-scale environmental projects coming to market. ??
